DTC P0217: Engine Coolant Over Temperature Condition

P0217 - ENGINE COOLANT OVER TEMPERATURE CONDITION

Description:  Indicates an engine overheat condition was detected by the engine temperature sensor (CHT or ECT depending how the vehicle is equipped).
Possible Causes:
  • Engine cooling system concerns
  • Low engine coolant level
  • Base engine concerns
  • Excessive engine RPM in NEUTRAL or operated in the incorrect transmission gear (GTDI vehicles only)
  • High engine RPM with engine temperature within a calibrated limit of an overheating condition (GTDI vehicles only)
Diagnostic Aids:  This DTC may be accompanied by other DTCs. If DTC P1285 or P1299 is present, disregard DTC P0217 at this time. Diagnose DTC P1285 or P1299 first.
Monitor the engine temperature PID (CHT or ECT) for an overheat condition. Typical engine temperature should be close to cooling system thermostat specification. For GTDI vehicles only, if excessive engine RPM is suspected, refer to POWERTRAIN CONTROL SOFTWARE , Engine Fluid Temperature Management, for additional information.
