Pinpoint Test

NOTE: The following Pinpoint Test uses a test light to simulate normal circuit loads. Use only the test lamp recommended in the Special Tools table at the beginning of this section or electrical equivalent. To avoid connector terminal damage, use the Rotunda Flex Probe kit for the test light probe connection to the vehicle. Do not use the test lamp probe directly on any connector. See Special Tool(s) .
  1. RETRIEVE THE BCM AND LTM DTCs  FROM THE SELF-TESTS
    1. Using a scan tool, perform the BCM self-test.
    2. Using a scan tool, perform the LTM self-test.

    Are any DTCs  recorded?

  2. REPEAT THE BCM SELF-TEST
    1. Disconnect: Liftgate Release Switch.
    2. Using a scan tool, clear the BCM DTCs  .
    3. Using a scan tool, perform the BCM self-test.

    Is DTC B12E8:11 recorded? 

    • Yes: GO to .
    • No: INSTALL a new liftgate release switch.
  3. CHECK THE LIFTGATE RELEASE SWITCH INPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Disconnect BCM C2280C.
    3. Measure:
      Liftgate Release Switch Ground

      - Ground

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    • Yes: GO to  14.
    • No: REPAIR the circuit.
  4. CHECK THE EXTERIOR LIFTGATE RELEASE SWITCH
    1. Unlock the doors with the door lock control switch.
    2. Disconnect: Liftgate Release Switch.
    3. Connect a fused jumper wire:

    Does the liftgate release? 

    • Yes: INSTALL a new liftgate release switch.
    • No: LEAVE the jumper wire connected. GO to .
  5. CHECK FOR BCM DTCs  FROM THE SELF-TEST
    1. Using a scan tool, clear the BCM DTCs  .
    2. Using a scan tool, perform the BCM self-test with the jumper wire still connected.

    Is DTC B12E8:11 retrieved? 

    • Yes: REMOVE the jumper wire. GO to  8.
    • No: REMOVE the jumper wire. GO to .
  6. CHECK THE LIFTGATE RELEASE SWITCH GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
    1. Using a scan tool, clear the BCM DTCs  .
    2. Connect a fused jumper wire:
      Liftgate Release Switch Ground

    3. Using a scan tool, perform the BCM self-test.

    Is DTC B12E8:11 retrieved? 

    • Yes: REPAIR the liftgate release switch ground circuit.
    • No: GO to .
  7. CHECK THE LIFTGATE RELEASE SWITCH INPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Disconnect BCM C2280C.
    3. Measure:
      Liftgate Release Switch BCM

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    • Yes: GO to  14.
    • No: REPAIR the circuit.
  8. CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE LIFTGATE LATCH OR LTM
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Disconnect: Liftgate Latch (manual liftgate).
    3. Disconnect: LTM C4174B (power liftgate).
    4. Ignition ON.
    5. For manual liftgate, measure:
      Liftgate Latch Ground

    6. For power liftgate, measure:
      LTM Ground

    Is any voltage present? 

    • Yes: GO to .
    • No: GO to  10.
  9. CHECK FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Disconnect BCM C2280D.
    3. Ignition ON.
    4. Measure:
      BCM Ground

    Is any voltage present? 

    • Yes: REPAIR the circuit for a short to voltage.
    • No: GO to  14.
  10. CHECK FOR BCM OUTPUT
    NOTE: The BCM only supplies voltage for the liftgate latch release momentarily. It is important to monitor the test light while activating the liftgate release switch.
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Connect: Liftgate Release Switch.
    3. Unlock the doors with the door lock control switch.
    4. For manual liftgate, press the liftgate release switch while monitoring the test light.

    5. For power liftgate, press the liftgate release switch while monitoring the test light.

    Does the test light momentarily illuminate? 

    • Yes: For a manual liftgate, GO to  12.

      For a power liftgate, GO to  13.

    • No: VERIFY the BCM fuse 25 (15A) is OK. If OK, GO to  11.
  11. CHECK THE LIFTGATE RELEASE OUTPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
    1. Disconnect: BCM C2280D.
    2. For manual liftgate, measure:

    3. For power liftgate, measure:

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    • Yes: GO to  14.
    • No: REPAIR the circuit.
  12. CHECK THE LIFTGATE LATCH GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
    1. Measure:
      Liftgate Latch Ground

      - Ground

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    • Yes: INSTALL a new liftgate latch. REFER to LIFTGATE LATCH .
    • No: REPAIR the circuit.
  13. CHECK FOR CORRECT LTM OPERATION
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Disconnect and inspect all LTM connectors.
    3. Repair:
      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
    4. Reconnect all LTM connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
    5. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    • Yes: CHECK OASIS  for any applicable TSBs  . If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no TSBs  address this concern, INSTALL a new LTM. REFER to LIFTGATE/TRUNK MODULE (LTM) .
    • No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
  14. CHECK FOR CORRECT BCM OPERATION
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Disconnect and inspect all BCM connectors.
    3. Repair:
      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
    4. Reconnect all BCM connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
    5. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present?
