Pinpoint Test

  1. CHECK THE A/C  SYSTEM PRESSURE
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. With a manifold gauge set connected, check the A/C  system pressure.

    Is the A/C system pressure above 290 kPa (42 psi)? 

  2. CHECK THE A/C  PRESSURE SENSOR (ACP_PRESS) PID
    1. Ignition ON.
    2. Using a scan tool, view PCM PIDs  .
    3. With a manifold gauge set connected, compare the pressure readings of the manifold gauge set and the PCM PID ACP_PRESS.

    Are the pressure values of the manifold gauge set and the PID similar? 

    • Yes: GO to .
    • No: INSTALL a new A/C  pressure transducer.
  3. CHECK THE A/C  EVAPORATOR TEMPERATURE (EVAP_TEMP) PID
    1. Allow the vehicle exterior and interior to stabilize to the ambient temperature.
    2. Using a scan tool, view the HVAC module PIDs  .
    3. Monitor the HVAC module PID EVAP_TEMP.

    Does the PID read similar to the ambient temperature? 

  4. CHECK THE A/C  SWITCH (CC_SW_AC) PID WITH THE A/C  ON
    1. Using a scan tool, view the FCIM PIDs  .
    2. Monitor the FCIM PID CC_SW_AC.
    3. Select panel, press the A/C  button (indicator on) on the HVAC controls.

    Does the PID read Active when the button is pressed? 

  5. CHECK THE A/C  REQUEST SIGNAL (AC_REQ) PID WITH THE A/C  ON
    1. Using a scan tool, view the PCM PIDs  .
    2. With the A/C  activated from the HVAC controls, monitor the PCM PID AC_REQ.

    Does the PID read ON? 

    • Yes: GO to .
    • No: GO to  12.
  6. CHECK THE A/C  COMPRESSOR COMMANDED STATE (ACC_CMD) PID WITH THE A/C  ON
    1. KOER.
    2. Using a scan tool, view the PCM PIDs  .
    3. Turn the A/C  compressor on using the PCM PID ACC_CMD.

    Does the A/C compressor turn on? 

    • Yes: GO to  13.
    • No: GO to .
  7. CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE A/C  CLUTCH RELAY
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Disconnect: A/C  Clutch Relay.
    3. Measure:
      BJB Ground

      Pin Circuit Measurement / Action Pin Circuit

      - Ground

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    • Yes: GO to .
    • No: VERIFY BJB fuse 62 (10A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit. If not OK, REFER to the appropriate wiring diagrams to identify the possible causes of the circuit short. REFER to OEM FUSE AND RELAY INFORMATION and OEM WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  8. BYPASS THE A/C  CLUTCH RELAY
    1. Start the engine.
    2. Connect a fused jumper wire:

    Does the A/C compressor clutch engage? 

    • Yes: REMOVE the jumper wire.

      INSTALL a new A/C  clutch relay.

    • No: LEAVE the jumper wire installed.

      GO to .

  9. CHECK THE A/C  COMPRESSOR CLUTCH FIELD COIL VOLTAGE SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Disconnect: A/C  Compressor Clutch Field Coil.
    3. Measure:
      A/C  Compressor Clutch Field Coil Ground

      1 CH401 (VT/WH)

      - Ground

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    • Yes: REMOVE the jumper wire. GO to 10  .
    • No: REMOVE the jumper wire. REPAIR the circuit.
  10. CHECK THE A/C  COMPRESSOR CLUTCH FIELD COIL GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
    1. Measure:
      A/C  Compressor Clutch Field Coil Ground

      Pin Circuit Measurement / Action Pin Circuit
      2 GD120 (BK/GN)

      - Ground

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    • Yes: GO to 11  .
    • No: REPAIR the circuit.
  11. CHECK THE A/C  COMPRESSOR CLUTCH AIR GAP
    1. Measure the A/C  compressor clutch air gap at 3 equally spaced locations between the clutch hub and the A/C  compressor clutch pulley.

    Is the A/C compressor clutch air gap greater than 0.6 mm (0.0236 in)? 

  12. CHECK FOR CORRECT HVAC MODULE OPERATION
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Disconnect and inspect all HVAC module connectors.
    3. Repair:
      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
    4. Reconnect the HVAC module connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
    5. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    • Yes: CHECK OASIS  for any applicable TSBs  . If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no TSBs  address this concern, INSTALL a new HVAC module. REFER to Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC) Module .
    • No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
  13. CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Disconnect and inspect all PCM connectors.
    3. Repair:
      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
    4. Reconnect the PCM connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
    5. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    • Yes: CHECK OASIS  for any applicable TSBs  . If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no TSBs  address this concern, INSTALL a new PCM:

      REFER to POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) - 2.0L GTDI , or

      REFER to POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) - 3.5L TI-VCT .

    • No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
