Starting in the 2010 model year, all California and Federal gasoline or diesel fueled on road heavy duty engines used in vehicles over 14,000 lbs. GVWR are required to phase into heavy duty OBD. The phase in starts with certifying one engine family to heavy duty OBD in the 2010 model year. By model year 2013, all engine families must certify to the heavy duty OBD requirements. Vehicles or engines that do not comply with heavy duty OBD during the phase in period must comply with EMD+.
