Removal and Installation

WARNING: Do not use any fluid other than clean brake fluid meeting manufacturer's specification. Additionally, do not use brake fluid that has been previously drained. Following these instructions will help prevent system contamination, brake component damage and the risk of serious personal injury.

NOTE: Do not spill brake fluid on painted surfaces or damage to the surface may occur. If brake fluid is spilled onto a painted or plastic surface, immediately wash the surface with water.

NOTE: Electronic modules are sensitive to static electrical charges. If exposed to these charges, damage may result.

NOTE: When replacing either the Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU) or the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) module individually, make sure that the number of coils (metal cans) in the ABS module equals the number of valves in the HCU. This is an additional method of verifying that the correct replacement part number has been selected. Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the components.

With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
NOTE: The HCU bracket-to-body bolt is accessed through the LH wheel opening.

Remove the HCU bracket-to-body bolt.
- To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
Remove the cooling system degas bottle. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING - GASOLINE ENGINES (gasoline engines) or ENGINE COOLING - DIESEL ENGINES (diesel engines).
Disconnect the ABS module electrical connector.
NOTE: Overtightening the brake tube fittings will damage the fittings and the HCU.

NOTE: Note the location and orientation of all brake tubes before disconnecting the brake tube fittings.

Disconnect the brake tubes from the HCU.
- To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
Remove the 2 HCU bracket-to-body nuts.
- To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
Remove the HCU.
Remove the 3 HCU-to-HCU bracket bolts and separate the bracket and the HCU.
- To install, tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
To install, reverse the removal procedure.
1. If a new HCU was installed and the vehicle is equipped with Roll Stability Control (RSC®) and/or trailer sway control, connect the scan tool and carry out the IVD Initialization sequence.
