Removal and Installation
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2013 Ford F-550 Super Duty, 2013 Ford F-450 Super Duty, 2013 Ford F-350 Super Duty, and 2013 Ford F-250 Super Duty. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- With the engine not running, apply the brake pedal several times to deplete the brake booster accumulator reserve.
- Remove the cooling system degas bottle. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING - GASOLINE ENGINES for gasoline engine vehicles and ENGINE COOLING - DIESEL ENGINES for diesel engine vehicles.
- Disconnect the brake fluid level switch.
- If equipped, disconnect the vacuum solenoid electrical connector, detach the solenoid from the bracket and position aside.

NOTE: The brake master cylinder nuts are a torque-prevailing type and cannot be reused.
Remove and discard the 2 brake master cylinder nuts and position the brake master cylinder aside.
- To install, tighten to 23 Nm (17 lb-ft).
- If equipped, disconnect the power distribution auxiliary relay box and position aside.
- Disconnect the 2 brake booster power steering jumper line fittings.
- Remove and discard the 2 Teflon® O-rings.
- To install, tighten to 28 Nm (21 lb-ft).
- Disconnect the power steering fluid return hose.
- Remove the steering column opening trim panel. For additional information, refer to Instrument Panel - Exploded View in INSTRUMENT PANEL AND CONSOLE .

NOTE: Do not service the brake booster without first removing the stoplamp switch. Remove this switch with the brake pedal in the at-rest position. Attempting to remove the switch when the plunger is extended (during pedal apply) results in damage to the switch.
Remove the stoplamp switch. For additional information, refer to EXTERIOR LIGHTING .
- Remove the cotter pin clip, brake pedal cotter pin and spacer.
- Disconnect the brake booster push rod from the brake pedal arm.
- Remove the 4 brake booster nuts.
- To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
- Remove the brake booster.

NOTE: Do not press, pull or otherwise move the brake pedal while installing the stoplamp switch. Install this switch with the booster push rod attached to the brake pedal and with the brake pedal in the at-rest position. Installing this switch with the brake pedal in any other position results in incorrect adjustment and damages the switch.
To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- Using the Teflon® Seal Installer Set, install new Teflon® O-rings on the power steering line fittings.
- Fill the power steering system. For additional information, refer to STEERING SYSTEM .
