Removal and Installation

WARNING: Do not use any fluid other than clean brake fluid meeting manufacturer's specification. Additionally, do not use brake fluid that has been previously drained. Following these instructions will help prevent system contamination, brake component damage and the risk of serious personal injury.

NOTE: Do not spill brake fluid on painted or plastic surfaces or damage to the surface may occur. If brake fluid is spilled onto a painted or plastic surface, immediately wash the surface with water.

All vehicles 

  1. With the engine not running, relieve the vacuum in the brake booster by pressing and releasing the brake pedal a minimum of 5 times.
  2. Remove the secondary battery. For additional information, refer to BATTERY AND BATTERY TRAY -- EXPLODED VIEW, SECONDARY .
  3. Remove the 6 battery tray/degas bottle bolts and position aside. For additional information, refer to Battery and Battery Tray - Exploded View, Secondary in BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  4. Disconnect the brake fluid level switch electrical connector.
  5. If equipped, disconnect the trailer brake control transducer electrical connectors.
  6. Disconnect the brake tubes from the master cylinder.
    • To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).

    Vehicles with vacuum boost 

  7. NOTE: The brake master cylinder nuts are a torque-prevailing type and cannot be reused.

    Remove and discard the brake master cylinder nuts, then remove the brake master cylinder.

    • To install, tighten to 23 Nm (17 lb-ft).

    Vehicles with Hydro-Boost® 

  8. Disconnect the power steering line from the power steering line bracket.
  9. NOTE: The brake master cylinder nuts are a torque-prevailing type and cannot be reused.

    Remove the power steering line bracket/master cylinder nut and position the bracket aside by first sliding it forward and then pivoting it to the side.

    • Discard the nut.
    • To install, tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).
  10. NOTE: The brake master cylinder nuts are a torque-prevailing type and cannot be reused.

    Remove the remaining brake master cylinder nut and the brake master cylinder.

    • Discard the nut.
    • To install, tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).

    All vehicles 

  11. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
