Differential Case and Ring Gear - Electronic Locking Differential (ELD): Disassembly

  1. Remove the differential carrier. For additional information, refer to DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER .
  2. Remove the differential carrier bearings. For additional information, refer to DIFFERENTIAL BEARINGS .
  3. Remove the ELD field coil. For additional information, refer to ELECTRONIC LOCKING DIFFERENTIAL (ELD) FIELD COIL .
  4. Remove and discard the 12 differential ring gear bolts.

  5. Insert a punch in the bolt holes and drive off the differential ring gear.

  6. Position the Differential Clutch Preload Gauge in a vise.

  7. Position the differential case on the Differential Clutch Preload Gauge.

  8. Index mark the differential case halves.

  9. NOTE: Attach the Drive Pinion Flange Holding Fixture with a bolt and nut.

    Install the Drive Pinion Flange Holding Fixture on the differential case as shown below and loosen the 9 differential case bolts.

  10. Remove the 9 differential case bolts.

  11. Remove the right half of the differential case and differential side gear.

  12. Remove the differential pinion shaft and differential pinion gears.

  13. Remove the left differential side gear and the side gear thrust washer.

  14. Using a suitable tool, remove the ELD cam retaining ring.

  15. Remove the ELD differential washer, wave spring and cam ring.
