Test Procedure

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 25 other vehicles, including the 2013 Lincoln Navigator, 2013 Lincoln MKZ, 2013 Lincoln MKX, 2013 Lincoln MKT, and 2013 Lincoln MKS. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. DN1 CHECK FOR DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) 
    NOTE: This pinpoint test is designed to diagnose multiple components in the same test steps, only measure the circuits that apply to the vehicle and component being diagnosed.
    NOTE: Diagnose circuit faults prior to range or performance faults.

    Are DTCs P007C, P007D, P0097, P0098, P009A, P00CE, P0106, P0107, P0108, P0109, P0111, P0112, P0113, P0114, P012B, P012C, P012D, P0236, P0237, P0238, P025E or P1112 present? 

    Yes No
    GO to DN2  . For all others, GO to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) CHARTS AND DESCRIPTIONS .
  2. DN2 MONITOR THE PID 
    NOTE: This step applies to multiple components, only measure the circuits that apply to the vehicle and component being diagnosed.
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • For the TCBP/CACT sensor,
    • Access the PCM and monitor the CAC_V (VOLT) and TIP_PRES_V (VOLT) PIDs.
    • For the TCIPT sensor,
    • Access the PCM and monitor the IAT (VOLT) and TURBO_INLET_V (VOLT) PIDs.
    • For the MAP/IAT2 sensor,
    • Access the PCM and monitor the IAT2 (VOLT) and MAP (VOLT) PIDs.

    Are the voltages between 0.5 - 4.95 V? 

    Yes No
    GO to  DN7. GO to DN3  .
  3. DN3 CHECK THE VREF CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE 
    NOTE: This step applies to multiple components, only measure the circuits that apply to the vehicle and component being diagnosed.
    • Ignition OFF.
    • For the TCBP/CACT sensor,
    • TCBP/CACT Sensor connector disconnected.
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Measure the voltage between:
      (+) TCBP/CACT Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-) TCBP/CACT Sensor Connector, Harness Side
      VREF SIGRTN
    • For the TCIPT sensor,
    • TCIPT Sensor connector disconnected.
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Measure the voltage between:
      (+) TCIPT Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-) TCIPT Sensor Connector, Harness Side
      VREF - Pin 3 SIGRTN - Pin 1
    • For the MAP/IAT2 sensor,
    • MAP/IAT2 Sensor connector disconnected.
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Measure the voltage between:
      (+) MAP/IAT2 Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-) MAP/IAT2 Sensor Connector, Harness Side
      VREF SIGRTN

    Is the voltage between 4.5 - 5.5 V? 

    Yes No
    GO to DN4  . GO to PINPOINT TEST C .
  4. DN4 CHECK THE CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN 
    NOTE: This step applies to multiple components, only measure the circuits that apply to the vehicle and component being diagnosed.
    • Ignition OFF.
    • PCM connector disconnected.
    • For the TCBP/CACT sensor,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) TCBP/CACT Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-) PCM Connector, Harness Side
      CACT CACT
      TCBP TCBP
      SIGRTN SIGRTN
    • For the TCIPT sensor,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) TCIPT Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-) PCM Connector, Harness Side
      IAT - Pin 2 IAT
      TCIP - Pin 4 TCIP
      SIGRTN - Pin 1 SIGRTN
    • For the MAP/IAT2 sensor,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) MAP/IAT2 Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-) PCM Connector, Harness Side
      IAT2 IAT2
      MAP MAP
      SIGRTN SIGRTN

    Are the resistances less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes No
    GO to DN5  . REPAIR the open circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  5. DN5 CHECK THE SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    NOTE: This step applies to multiple components, only measure the circuits that apply to the vehicle and component being diagnosed.
    • For the TCBP/CACT sensor,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) TCBP/CACT Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-)
      CACT Ground
      TCBP Ground
    • For the TCIPT sensor,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) TCIPT Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-)
      IAT - Pin 2 Ground
      TCIP - Pin 4 Ground
    • For the MAP/IAT2 sensor,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) MAP/IAT2 Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-)
      IAT2 Ground
      MAP Ground

    Are the resistances greater than 10K ohms? 

    Yes No
    GO to DN6  . REPAIR the short circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  6. DN6 CHECK THE SIGNAL FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    NOTE: This step applies to multiple components, only measure the circuits that apply to the vehicle and component being diagnosed.
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • For the TCBP/CACT sensor,
    • Measure the voltage between:
      (+) TCBP/CACT Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-)
      CACT Ground
      TCBP Ground
    • For the TCIPT sensor,
    • Measure the voltage between:
      (+) TCIPT Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-)
      IAT - Pin 2 Ground
      TCIP - Pin 4 Ground
    • For the MAP/IAT2 sensor,
    • Measure the voltage between:
      (+) MAP/IAT2 Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-)
      IAT2 Ground
      MAP Ground

    Is any voltage present? 

    Yes No
    REPAIR the short circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. GO to DN7  .
  7. DN7 INTERMITTENT CHECK 
    NOTE: This step applies to multiple components, only measure the circuits that apply to the vehicle and component being diagnosed.
    • Ignition OFF.
    • PCM connector connected.
    • For the TCBP/CACT sensor,
    • TCBP/CACT Sensor connector connected.
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Access the PCM and monitor the CAC_V (VOLT) PID.
    • Access the PCM and monitor the TIP_PRES_V (VOLT) PID.
    • For the TCIPT sensor,
    • TCIPT Sensor connector connected.
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Access the PCM and monitor the IAT (VOLT) PID.
    • Access the PCM and monitor the TURBO_INLET_V (VOLT) PID.
    • For the MAP/IAT2 sensor,
    • MAP/IAT2 Sensor connector connected.
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Access the PCM and monitor the IAT2 (VOLT) PID.
    • Access the PCM and monitor the MAP (VOLT) PID.
    • While observing the PID, carry out the following:
      • Tap on the sensor to simulate road shock
      • Wiggle the sensor connector

    Is there a large change in the voltage reading? 

    Yes No
    DISCONNECT and INSPECT the connector.
    If no concerns are present, INSTALL a new TCBP/CACT, TCIPT or MAP/IAT2 sensor. REFER to the appropriate Electronic Engine Controls article.
    Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    GO to DN8  .
  8. DN8 SIMULATE THE OPPOSITE SIGNAL TO THE PCM 
    NOTE: This step applies to multiple components, only measure the circuits that apply to the vehicle and component being diagnosed.
    • Ignition OFF.
    • For the TCBP/CACT sensor,
    • TCBP/CACT Sensor connector disconnected.
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Access the PCM and monitor the CAC_V (VOLT) PID.
    • Access the PCM and monitor the TIP_PRES_V (VOLT) PID.
    • For the TCIPT sensor,
    • TCIPT Sensor connector disconnected.
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Access the PCM and monitor the IAT (VOLT) PID.
    • Access the PCM and monitor the TURBO_INLET_V (VOLT) PID.
    • For the MAP/IAT2 sensor,
    • MAP/IAT2 Sensor connector disconnected.
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Access the PCM and monitor the IAT2 (VOLT) PID.
    • Access the PCM and monitor the MAP (VOLT) PID.

    Is the voltage greater than 4.2 V? 

    Yes No
    For DTCs P009A, P00CE or P0111, GO to DN9  .
    For DTCs P0106, P012B and P0236, GO to  DN11.
    GO to  DN12.
  9. DN9 TEMPERATURE SENSOR CORRELATION 
    • Cold soak the vehicle at ambient temperature for at least 6 hours.
    • Ignition OFF.
    • For the TCBP/CACT sensor,
    • TCBP/CACT Sensor connector connected.
    • For the TCIPT sensor,
    • TCIPT Sensor connector connected.
    • For the MAP/IAT2 sensor,
    • MAP/IAT2 Sensor connector connected.
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Access the PCM and monitor the CAC_T (TEMP), IAT (TEMP) and IAT2 (TEMP) PIDs.

    Are the IAT, CACT and IAT2 temperature readings within 16.67°C (30°F) of each other? 

    Yes No
    UNABLE to duplicate or identify the concern at this time. Cold soak the vehicle at ambient temperature for at least 6 hours. REPEAT the self-test.
    GO to DN10  .
    CHECK the suspect sensor for contamination or obstructions. REPAIR as necessary.
    If no concerns are present, INSTALL a new sensor for the sensor that exceeded the temperature limit. REFER to the appropriate Electronic Engine Controls article.
    Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  10. DN10 TEMPERATURE SENSOR CORRELATION AT OPERATING TEMPERATURE 
    • Ignition ON, engine running.
    • Allow the engine to idle at the normal operating temperature.
    • Access the PCM and monitor the CAC_T (TEMP), IAT (TEMP) and IAT2 (TEMP) PIDs.
    • Drive the vehicle at a steady speed of 88 km/h (55 mph) for a minimum of 6 minutes.

    Does the IAT temperature exceed 65.5°C (150°F), or does the CACT temperature exceed 104.4°C (220° F), or does the IAT2 temperature exceed 115.6°C (240°F)? 

    Yes No
    CHECK the charge air cooler (CAC) for debris and obstructed air flow. REPAIR as necessary.
    If no concerns are present, INSTALL a new sensor for the sensor that exceeded the temperature limit. REFER to the appropriate Electronic Engine Controls article.
    Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    GO to  DN12.
  11. DN11 PRESSURE SENSOR CORRELATION 
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Access the PCM and monitor the BARO (PRESS), MAP (PRESS), TIP_PRS_BOOST (PRESS) and TURBO_INLET (PRESS) PIDs.

    Is the suspect sensor PID reading within 6.77 kPa (0.98 psi) of the BARO PID reading? 

    Yes No
    GO to DN12  . CHECK the suspect sensor for contamination or obstructions. REPAIR as necessary.
    If no concerns are present, INSTALL a new sensor for the sensor that exceeded the pressure limit. REFER to the appropriate Electronic Engine Controls article.
    Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  12. DN12 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the PCM connectors.
    • Visually inspect for:
      • pushed out pins
      • corrosion
    • Connect all the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Carry out the PCM self-test.
    • Verify the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes No
    INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to FLASH ELECTRICALLY ERASABLE PROGRAMMABLE READ ONLY MEMORY (EEPROM) , Programming the VID Block for a Replacement PCM. The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
