Hands-Off Warning

The PSCM monitors the torque sensor in the EPAS system to determine if a hand is on the steering wheel. If the system still detects the driver's hands are not on the wheel after a few seconds, the hands-off warning message and chime are generated by the IPC . The EPAS system sends the message to the Image Processing Module - A (IPM-A) and then from the Image Processing Module - A (IPM-A) to the IPC to request the hands-off warning.

The hands-off warning has 2 levels of warnings and chime. Level 1 is a message center warning only and is triggered after 2 seconds of hands-off driving after an Alert or Aid activation. Level 2 is a message center warning along with a chime. This is an escalation from level 1 and is triggered after 4 seconds of hands-off driving.

Depending on the road conditions and the grip/touch on the steering wheel, the Lane Departure Warning (LDW) system may indicate hands-off driving when a hand(s) is on the steering wheel .
