- Using Diagnosis by Symptom index, select the routine that best describes the symptom.
- Always begin diagnosis of a symptom with:
- preliminary inspections.
- verifications of condition.
- checking the fluid levels.
- carrying out other test procedures as directed by On-Line Automotive Service Information System (OASIS) messages or the DTC Chart.

NOTE: Vehicles equipped with a gasoline engine, use a PCM for transmission control.NOTE: Vehicles equipped with a diesel engine, use a Transmission Control Module (TCM) for transmission control.NOTE: When the battery is disconnected or a new battery is installed, certain transmission operating parameters can be lost. The PCM or TCM must relearn these parameters. Perform the Solenoid Body Strategy Adaptive Drive Cycle, refer to SHIFT POINT ROAD TEST .NOTE: 5th gear start from stop position: While the engine is running and the vehicle is driven, transmission diagnostic tests are constantly running in the background. If the vehicle exhibits symptoms of engaging 5th gear from a stop with no DTCs stored in the PCM/TCM memory, this indicates the PCM/TCM is running a diagnostic test. In order for the diagnostic test to complete its test, accelerate the vehicle in 5th gear to 72 kPh (45 mph), then slowly decelerate to a stop. Repeat the process until a DTC is set or the transmission returns to normal operation. If a DTC is set, follow the instructions for that DTC. If no DTC is set, investigate for possible sources of low line pressure on engine start. Possible sources include, low oil level, damaged filter, transmission pump.
The list contains only possible components that may cause or contribute to the concern. These components are listed in the removal sequence.
