Cylinder Head: Disassembly

  1. Install the Valve Spring Compressors on the cylinder head.

  2. NOTE: It will be necessary to adjust the Valve Spring Compressor as needed to get proper alignment with the valves.
    NOTE: Position the cylinder head on 2 pieces of wood to aid on removing the valves.

    Using the Valve Spring Compressor, compress the valve spring and remove the valve stem keys.

  3. Remove the valve spring retainer and valve spring.
  4. NOTE: It may be necessary to file the tip of the valve to aid in removal of the valve from the cylinder head.

    Remove the intake valve(s).

  5. Remove and discard the valve seal assembly.
  6. Clean and inspect the intake valves, valve guides and valve seats. Replace components that are damaged or out of specification. For additional information, refer to SPECIFICATIONS .
  7. NOTE: It may be necessary to file the tip of the valve to aid in removal of the valve from the cylinder head.

    Remove the exhaust valve(s).

  8. Remove and discard the valve seal assembly.
  9. Inspect the exhaust valves, valve guides and valve seats. Replace components that are damaged or out of specification. For additional information, refer to SPECIFICATIONS .
  10. NOTE: Do not use Brake clean and/or other solvents during the cleaning process, damage to the valve guide may occur.

    Using a 1/4 inch brass bore brush (obtain locally) lightly coated with clean automatic transmission fluid, clean the exhaust valve guides.
