Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor, Engine Front Cover and Gaskets: Removal

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
  2. Remove the engine oil pan drain plug.
    • Drain the oil, then install the drain plug and tighten to 23 Nm (17 lb-ft).
  3. Remove the engine cooling fan shroud. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING - GASOLINE ENGINES .
  4. Remove the engine cooling fan. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING - GASOLINE ENGINES .
  5. Remove the RH valve cover. For additional information, refer to VALVE COVER - RH .
  6. Remove the LH valve cover. For additional information, refer to VALVE COVER - LH .
  7. Rotate the tensioner clockwise and remove the accessory drive belt.

  8. Remove the 3 bolts and position the power steering pump aside.
  9. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and washer.
    • Discard the crankshaft pulley bolt.
  10. Using the Crankshaft Vibration Damper Remover, remove the crankshaft pulley.

  11. Using the Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Remover, remove and discard the crankshaft front seal.

  12. Remove the bolt and the accessory drive idler pulley.
  13. Remove the 4 bolts and the coolant pump pulley.
  14. Remove the 3 bolts and the accessory drive belt tensioner.
  15. Disconnect the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.
  16. Remove the nut and the starter wiring harness and transmission cooler tube support brackets from the stud bolt.
  17. Disconnect the RH and LH radio ignition interference capacitor electrical connectors.
  18. Disconnect the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor electrical connector.
  19. Remove the 2 nuts and the RH and LH radio ignition interference capacitors.
  20. Remove the 4 front oil pan bolts.
  21. Remove the 8 bolts and the 7 studs.

  22. NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.

    Remove the engine front cover from the front cover to cylinder block dowel.

    • Remove the engine front cover gaskets.
    • Clean the mating surfaces with silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging.
    • Inspect the mating surfaces.
