RH Valve Cover and Gasket: Removal

  1. Disconnect the quick connect couplings and remove the PCV tube. For additional information, refer to FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION - GASOLINE AND DIESEL .
  2. Disconnect the 4 RH ignition wires from the 4 RH ignition coils.
  3. Disconnect the 4 RH ignition wire retainers from the valve cover.
  4. Disconnect the RH Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) solenoid electrical connector.
  5. Remove the bolt and position the oil level indicator tube aside.
  6. Disconnect the 2 wiring harness retainers from the front and the 3 wiring harness retainers from the top of the RH valve cover.
  7. Disconnect the heater coolant hose retainer from the intake manifold.
  8. If equipped with an automatic transmission, remove the bolt and position the automatic transmission fluid fill tube aside.
  9. NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.
    NOTE: When removing the valve cover, make sure to avoid damaging the Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) solenoid.
    NOTE: The fasteners are part of the valve cover and should not be removed.

    Loosen the 10 fasteners and remove the RH valve cover and gasket.

    • Clean the valve cover mating surface of the cylinder head with silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging.
    • Discard the valve cover gasket. Clean the valve cover gasket groove with soap and water or a suitable solvent.
