Oil Pan: Installation

All vehicles 

1. NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges, which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.

   Inspect the oil pan and engine sealing surfaces. Clean the mating surfaces of the engine and oil pan with silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging.

2. NOTE: If the oil pan is not installed and the fasteners tightened within 5 minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned. To clean the sealing area, use silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage. If this timing cannot be met, tighten fasteners 7, 8, 9 and 10 to 8 Nm (71 lb-in) within 5 minutes of applying the sealer and final torque all of the fasteners within 1 hour of applying the sealer.
   NOTE: If the engine front cover has been removed, it is only necessary to apply sealant to the crankshaft rear seal retainer plate-to-cylinder block sealing surfaces.

   Apply an 8 mm (0.31 in) bead of silicone gasket and sealant to the crankshaft rear seal retainer plate-to-cylinder block sealing surfaces and the engine front cover-to-cylinder block sealing surfaces.

3. Position the oil pan baffle and gasket.
4. NOTE: The 2 oil pump screen and pickup tube-to-oil pump bolts must be tightened prior to tightening the oil pump screen and pickup tube-to-spacer bolt.

   Using a new O-ring seal, install the oil pump screen and pickup tube and the 3 bolts. Tighten the 2 oil pump screen and pickup tube-to-oil pump bolts in 2 stages.

   • Stage 1: Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
   • Stage 2: Tighten an additional 45 degrees.
5. Tighten the oil pump screen and pickup tube-to-spacer bolt to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
6. NOTE: Fastener locations 7, 13 and 16 are stud bolts.

   Install the oil pan and tighten the fasteners in sequence in 3 stages.

   • Stage 1: Tighten to 2 Nm (18 lb-in)
   • Stage 2: Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
   • Stage 3: Tighten an additional 45 degrees.

7. Using the adjustable jackstands, raise the subframe 100 mm (3.937 in).
8. NOTE: Do not tighten the subframe nuts and bolts at this time.

   Install the 4 subframe nuts and 4 subframe bolts.

9. Align the subframe nuts and bolts with the reference marks made during removal.
   • Tighten the bolts and nuts to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft).

10. Install the front crossmember brace and the 4 nuts.
    • Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
11. Position the steering intermediate shaft and install the bolt.
    • Tighten to 47 Nm (35 lb-in).

12. Attach the wiring harness retainers to A/C compressor stud bolts and the RH side of the oil pan.

13. Attach the wiring harness retainers to the RH side of the oil pan and the RH engine support insulator bracket stud bolt.

14. Attach the wiring harness retainers to the LH side of the oil pan and the front oil pan studs.
    • Install the 2 nuts to the front oil pan studs and tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).

15. Connect the oil level sensor electrical connector.
16. Install the crossmember brace. For additional information, refer to UNI-BODY, SUBFRAME AND MOUNTING SYSTEM .
17. Install the lower radiator sight shield and the 9 screws.

18. Using the Engine Support Bar, lower the engine 25 mm (0.984 in).
19. Install the RH and LH engine support insulator nuts.
    • Tighten to 63 Nm (46 lb-ft).

    Boss® 302 vehicles 

20. Attach the wiring harness retainer and the hood release cable retainer to the radiator support.

    All vehicles 

21. Install the upper radiator sight shield and the 8 pin-type retainers.

22. Position the sound enhancement pipe and install the bolt.
    • Tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
23. Install the ACL outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to the INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM & INTAKE AIR FILTERING SYSTEM -- MUSTANG .
24. NOTE: The engine appearance cover rubber grommets may remain on the cover. If so, remove the grommets from the cover and install them on the intake manifold before installing the cover.

    Install the engine appearance cover.

25. If equipped, install the strut tower cross brace and the 4 nuts.
    • Tighten to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft).

26. Install the 2 steering column dash boot nuts.
    • Tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).

27. Fill the engine with clean engine oil.
28. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
