Test Procedure

  1. AK1 PRELIMINARY DIAGNOSIS 
    NOTE: The presence of DTCs P0243, P0346 or P132A may indicate that the vehicle is operating in derate mode and may experience a loss of power.

    Are DTCs P0243, P0245, P0246 or P132A present? 

    Yes No
    GO to AK2  . RETURN to ENGINE CONTROLS - SYMPTOM CHARTS (DIESEL) , Symptom Charts for further direction.
  2. AK2 CHECK THE VPWR VOLTAGE TO THE COMPONENT 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • For the turbocharger wastegate regulating valve,
    • Turbocharger Wastegate Regulating Valve Solenoid connector disconnected.
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Measure the voltage between:
      (+) Turbocharger Wastegate Regulating Valve Solenoid Connector, Harness Side (-)
      VPWR - Pin 1 Ground
    • For the turbocharger actuator,
    • Turbocharger Actuator connector disconnected.
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Measure the voltage between:
      (+) Turbocharger Actuator Connector, Harness Side (-)
      VPWR - Pin 2 Ground

    Is the voltage greater than 10.5 V? 

    Yes No
    GO to AK3  . REPAIR the open circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  3. AK3 CHECK FOR AN OPEN 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • PCM-E connector disconnected.
    • For the turbocharger wastegate regulating valve,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) Turbocharger Wastegate Regulating Valve Solenoid Connector, Harness Side (-) PCM-E Connector, Harness Side
      TCWRVS - Pin 2 TCWRVS - Pin 1
    • For the turbocharger actuator,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) Turbocharger Actuator Connector, Harness Side (-) PCM-E Connector, Harness Side
      VGTC - Pin 1 VGTC - Pin 24

    Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes No
    GO to AK4  . REPAIR the open circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  4. AK4 CHECK THE CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VPWR 
    • For the turbocharger wastegate regulating valve,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) Turbocharger Wastegate Regulating Valve Solenoid Connector, Harness Side (-) Turbocharger Wastegate Regulating Valve Solenoid Connector, Harness Side
      TCWRVS - Pin 2 VPWR - Pin 1
    • For the turbocharger actuator,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) Turbocharger Actuator Connector, Harness Side (-) Turbocharger Actuator Connector, Harness Side
      VGTC - Pin 1 VPWR - Pin 2

    Is the resistance greater than 10K ohms? 

    Yes No
    GO to AK5  . REPAIR the short circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  5. AK5 CHECK FOR CORRECT COMPONENT OPERATION 
    • Visually inspect for:
      • pushed out pins
      • corrosion
    • Connect the suspect connector and make sure it seats correctly.
    • Carry out the PCM self-test and verify the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes No
    INSTALL a new Turbocharger Actuator or Turbocharger Wastegate Regulating Valve Solenoid. REFER to the appropriate Electronic Engine Controls article for turbocharger actuator replacement.
    REFER to the appropriate Fuel Charging and Controls article for turbocharger wastegate regulating valve solenoid replacement.
    Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    If the concern or DTC is still present,
    GO to AK6  .
    The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
  6. AK6 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the PCM connectors.
    • Visually inspect for:
      • pushed out pins
      • corrosion
    • Connect all the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Carry out the PCM self-test.
    • Verify the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes No
    INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to FLASH ELECTRICALLY ERASABLE PROGRAMMABLE READ ONLY MEMORY (EEPROM) . The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
