Pinpoint Test

  1. CHECK OTHER NON-NETWORK DIMMABLE LIGHTING SOURCES
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Place the headlamp switch in the parking lamps on position.
    3. Using the instrument panel dimmer switch, change the dimmable backlighting to its brightest setting.

    Are all non-networked dimmable backlighting sources inoperative? 

    1. Yes: REFER to Diagnostic Routine A: All Dimmable Non-Networked Illumination Is Inoperative .
    2. No: If all steering wheel switches do not illuminate, GO to .

      If an individual steering wheel switch does not illuminate, GO to  5.

  2. CHECK THE HORN OPERATION
    1. Push the driver air bag against the steering wheel to activate the horn.

    Does the horn sound? 

    1. Yes: GO to .
    2. No: REFER to DIAGNOSTIC ROUTINE A : The Horn Is Inoperative.
  3. CHECK THE STEERING WHEEL BACKLIGHTING VOLTAGE SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
    1. Disconnect: Lower Clockspring C218A.
    2. Measure:
      Clockspring Ground

      - Ground

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    1. Yes: GO to .
    2. No: REPAIR the circuit.
  4. CHECK THE STEERING WHEEL AND HARNESS
    1. Connect: Lower Clockspring C218A.
    2. Remove the driver air bag module. REFER to DRIVER AIR BAG MODULE .
    3. Disconnect: Upper Clockspring C218B.
    4. Connect: Battery Ground Cable.
    5. Place the headlamp switch in the parking lamps on position.
    6. Using the instrument panel dimmer switch, change the dimmable backlighting to its brightest setting.
    7. Measure:
      Clockspring Ground

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    1. Yes: REPAIR the steering wheel harness for an open or INSTALL a new steering wheel. REFER to STEERING WHEEL .
    2. No: INSTALL a new clockspring. REFER to CLOCKSPRING .
  5. CHECK FOR VOLTAGE AND GROUND TO THE STEERING WHEEL SWITCH
    1. Remove the driver air bag module. REFER to DRIVER AIR BAG MODULE .
    2. Disconnect: Suspect Steering Wheel Switch.
    3. Connect: Battery Ground Cable.
    4. Place the headlamp switch in the parking lamps on position.
    5. Measure:

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    1. Yes: INSTALL a new switch in question. REFER to STEERING WHEEL SWITCH .
    2. No: REPAIR the steering wheel harness for an open or INSTALL a new steering wheel. REFER to STEERING WHEEL .
