Pinpoint Test

  1. CHECK THE REAR WINDOW DEFROST GRID VOLTAGE
    1. Disconnect: Rear Window Defrost Grid C402A.
    2. Start the engine.
    3. Activate the rear defrost switch.
    4. Measure:
      Rear Window Defrost Grid Ground

      - Ground

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    • Yes: GO to .
    • No: GO to  3.
  2. CHECK THE REAR WINDOW DEFROST GRID GROUND
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Disconnect: Rear Window Defrost Grid C402B.
    3. Measure:
      Rear Window Defrost Grid Ground

      - Ground

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    • Yes: CARRY OUT the Grid Wire Test. REFER to Grid Wire Test . REPAIR the rear window defrost grid or INSTALL a new rear window glass if necessary. REFER to Window Grid Wire Repair .
    • No: REPAIR the circuit.
  3. CHECK THE VOLTAGE SUPPLY TO THE REAR WINDOW DEFROST RELAY
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Disconnect: Rear Window Defrost Relay.
    3. Ignition ON.
    4. Measure:
      Rear Window Defrost Relay Ground

      Socket Ground
      Pin Circuit Measurement / Action Pin Circuit
      2 CBB93 (GY/BN)

      - Ground
      3 SBB26 (YE/RD)

      - Ground

    Are the voltages greater than 11 volts? 

    • Yes: GO to .
    • No: VERIFY BJB fuses 26 (40A) and 93 (5A) are OK. If OK, REPAIR the affected circuit. If not OK, REFER to the appropriate wiring diagrams to identify the possible causes of the circuit short. REFER to OEM FUSE AND RELAY INFORMATION and OEM WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  4. CHECK THE HVAC MODULE OUTPUT
    NOTE: The following step uses a test light to simulate normal circuit loads. Use only the test light recommended in the Special Tools table at the beginning of this article. To avoid connector terminal damage, use the Flex Probe Kit for the test light probe connection to the vehicle. Do not use the test light probe directly on any connector. Refer to SPECIAL TOOL(S) .
    1. Start the engine.
    2. Activate the rear window defrost switch.
    3. Measure:
      Rear Window Defrost Relay Rear Window Defrost Relay

      1 CH122 (WH/OG) Test Light 2 CBB93 (GY/BN)

    Does the test light illuminate? 

    • Yes: GO to .
    • No: GO to  6.
  5. CHECK THE REAR WINDOW DEFROST RELAY
    1. Carry out the rear window defrost relay component test.

      Refer to OEM Wiring Diagrams - COMPONENT TESTING for schematic and connector information.

    Did the rear window defrost relay pass the component test? 

    • Yes: REPAIR open in circuit CRD06 (BN/YE).
    • No: INSTALL a new rear window defrost relay.
  6. CHECK THE REAR DEFROST SWITCH (CC_SW_R_DEF) PID
    1. Ignition ON.
    2. Using a scan tool, view FCIM PIDs  .
    3. Monitor the FCIM PID CC_SW_R_DEF while pressing and releasing the rear window defrost switch.

    Does the PID agree with the rear window defrost switch status? 

  7. CHECK THE REAR WINDOW DEFROST RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Disconnect: HVAC Module C228A.
    3. Measure:
      Rear Window Defrost Relay HVAC Module

      Pin Circuit Measurement / Action Pin Circuit
      1 CH122 (WH/OG)

      25 CH122 (WH/OG)

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    • Yes: GO to .
    • No: REPAIR the circuit.
  8. CHECK FOR CORRECT HVAC MODULE OPERATION
    1. Inspect the HVAC module connectors.
    2. Repair:
      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins as necessary
      • pushed-out-pins - install new pins as necessary
    3. Reconnect the HVAC module connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
    4. Reconnect all previously disconnected components and system electrical connectors.
    5. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    • Yes: CHECK OASIS  for any applicable TSBs  . If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no TSBs  address this concern, INSTALL a new HVAC module:

      REFER to HEATING VENTILATION AIR CONDITIONING (HVAC) MODULE - (EMTC), or

      REFER to HEATING VENTILATION AIR CONDITIONING (HVAC) MODULE - (DATC).

    • No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
