Pinpoint Test
- CARRY OUT THE IPC SELF-TEST
- Using a scan tool, perform the IPC self-test.
Are any DTCs recorded?
- Yes: For DTC P0460:11 or DTC P1346:11, GO to 2
.
For DTC P0460:13 or DTC P1346:13, GO to 6 .
For DTC P1243:06, GO to 18 .
For all other DTCs , REFER to DTC Chart: Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) .
- No: GO to 13 .
- CHECK THE FUEL INPUT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Disconnect: Fuel Pump Assembly (DTC P0460:11).
- Disconnect: Fuel Level Sensor (DTC P1346:11).
- Ignition ON.
- Wait one minute.

NOTE: DTC P0460:11 or P1346:11 can also be present.
Using a scan tool, repeat the IPC on-demand self-test.
Is DTC P0460:13 or P1346:13 retrieved?
- Yes: For the fuel pump assembly (DTC P0460:11), GO to 20
.
For the fuel level sensor (DTC P1346:11), INSTALL a new fuel level sensor. REFER to FUEL LEVEL SENSOR .
- No: GO to 3 .
- CHECK THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY AND FUEL LEVEL SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: IPC.
- Measure:
IPC Ground C220 Ground Pin Circuit Measurement / Action Pin Circuit 15 (DTC P0460:11) VMC11 (YE/VT) - Ground 14 (DTC P1346:11) VMC23 (GN/OG) - Ground
Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms?
- Yes: For DTC P0460:11, GO to 4
.
For DTC P1346:11, GO to 5 .
- No: REPAIR the circuit in question.
- CHECK THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY SIGNAL AND RETURN CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER
- Measure:
IPC IPC C220 C220 Pin Circuit Measurement / Action Pin Circuit 15 VMC11 (YE/VT) 2 RMC32 (GN/BU)
Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms?
- Yes: GO to 22 .
- No: REPAIR the circuits.
- Measure:
- CHECK THE FUEL LEVEL SENSOR SIGNAL AND RETURN CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER
- Measure:
IPC IPC C220 C220 Pin Circuit Measurement / Action Pin Circuit 14 VMC23 (GN/OG) 1 RMC33 (WH/VT)
Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms?
- Yes: GO to 22 .
- No: REPAIR the circuits.
- Measure:
- CHECK THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY OR FUEL LEVEL SENSOR FOR AN OPEN
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: Fuel Pump Assembly (DTC P0460:13).
- Disconnect: Fuel Level Sensor (DTC P1346:13).
- For DTC P0460:13, connect a fused jumper wire:
Fuel Pump Assembly Fuel Pump Assembly C3127 C3127 Pin Circuit Measurement / Action Pin Circuit 1 RMC32 (GN/BU) 2 VMC11 (YE/VT) - For DTC P1346:13, connect a fused jumper wire:
Fuel Level Sensor Fuel Level Sensor C3270 C3270 Pin Circuit Measurement / Action Pin Circuit 1 RMC33 (WH/VT) 2 VMC23 (GN/OG) - Ignition ON.
- Wait one minute.

NOTE: DTC P0460:13 or P1346:13 can also be present when carrying out this step and should be ignored at this time.
Using a scan tool, repeat the IPC self-test.
- Retrieve the IPC continuous DTCs .
Is DTC P0460:11 or P1346:11 retrieved?
- CHECK THE FUEL LEVEL SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: IPC.
- Ignition ON.
- Measure:
IPC Ground C220 Ground Pin Circuit Measurement / Action Pin Circuit 15 VMC11 (YE/VT) - Ground 2 RMC32 (GN/BU) - Ground
Is any voltage present?
- Yes: REPAIR the circuit in question.
- No: GO to 8 .
- CHECK THE FUEL LEVEL SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Ignition OFF.
- Measure:
IPC Fuel Pump Assembly C220 C3127 Pin Circuit Measurement / Action Pin Circuit 15 VMC11 (YE/VT) 2 VMC11 (YE/VT)
Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
- Yes: GO to 9 .
- No: REPAIR the circuit.
- CHECK THE FUEL LEVEL RETURN CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Measure:
IPC Fuel Pump Assembly C220 C3127 Pin Circuit Measurement / Action Pin Circuit 2 RMC32 (GN/BU) 1 RMC32 (GN/BU)
Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
- Yes: GO to 22 .
- No: REPAIR the circuit.
- Measure:
- CHECK THE FUEL LEVEL SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Disconnect: IPC.
- Ignition ON.
- Measure:
IPC Ground C220 Ground Pin Circuit Measurement / Action Pin Circuit 14 VMC23 (GN/OG) - Ground 1 RMC33 (WH/VT) - Ground
Is any voltage present?
- Yes: REPAIR the circuit in question.
- No: GO to 11 .
- CHECK THE FUEL LEVEL SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Measure:
IPC Fuel Level Sensor C220 C3270 Pin Circuit Measurement / Action Pin Circuit 14 VMC23 (GN/OG) 2 VMC23 (GN/OG)
Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
- Yes: GO to 12 .
- No: REPAIR the circuit.
- Measure:
- CHECK THE FUEL LEVEL SENSOR RETURN CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Measure:
IPC Fuel Level Sensor C220 C3270 Pin Circuit Measurement / Action Pin Circuit 1 RMC33 (WH/VT) 1 RMC33 (WH/VT)
Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
- Yes: GO to 22 .
- No: REPAIR the circuit.
- Measure:
- CARRY OUT THE IPC FUEL GAUGE ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
- Ignition ON.
- Using a scan tool, view the IPC PIDs .
- Select and command the fuel gauge PID (FuelLevel) from 0% to 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% while observing the fuel gauge.
Does the fuel gauge begin at (E) empty, move to approximately 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and F (full)?
- Yes: GO to 14 .
- No: INSTALL a new IPC. REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) .
- CHECK THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY INPUT TO THE IPC
- Disconnect: Fuel Pump Assembly.
- Ignition OFF.

NOTE: Since the IPC can be in anti-slosh mode, the self-test and tester values may not match the fuel gauge readings. Disregard the actual gauge indication during this test step.
Connect the universal gauge tester OTC3385 :
Fuel Pump Assembly Fuel Pump Assembly C3127 C3127 Pin Circuit Measurement / Action Pin Circuit 1 RMC32 (GN/BU) 2 VMC11 (YE/VT) - Ignition ON.
- Using a scan tool, view the IPC PIDs .

NOTE: It is extremely important to confirm the universal gauge tester settings with an ohmmeter to make sure the universal gauge tester is in the correct position. Failure to follow this check can result in inaccurate test results.
Select and monitor the IPC fuel level (FUELLVL1) PID with the instrument gauge system tester set at 180 ohms, 90 ohms, 55 ohms, 30 ohms and 10 ohms.
Does the PID begin at approximately 3, move to 70, 127, 185 then 251?
- Yes: DISCONNECT the universal gauge tester. GO to 16 .
- No: DISCONNECT the universal gauge tester. GO to 15 .
- CHECK THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY SIGNAL AND RETURN CIRCUITS FOR A HIGH RESISTANCE
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: IPC.
- Connect a fused jumper wire:

Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
- Yes: GO to 22 .
- No: REPAIR the circuits for high resistance.
- CHECK THE FUEL LEVEL SENSOR INPUT TO THE IPC
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: Fuel Level Sensor.

- Yes: DISCONNECT the instrument gauge system tester. GO to 18 .
- No: DISCONNECT the instrument gauge system tester. GO to 17 .
- CHECK THE FUEL LEVEL SENSOR SIGNAL AND RETURN CIRCUITS FOR A HIGH RESISTANCE
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: IPC.
- Connect a fused jumper wire:
Fuel Level Sensor Fuel Level Sensor C3270 C3270 Pin Circuit Measurement / Action Pin Circuit 1 RMC33 (WH/VT) 2 VMC23 (GN/OG) - Measure:
IPC IPC C220 C220 Pin Circuit Measurement / Action Pin Circuit 14 VMC23 (GN/OG) 1 RMC33 (WH/VT)
Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
- Yes: INSTALL a new IPC. REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) .
- No: REPAIR the circuits for high resistance.
- INSPECT THE FUEL TANK
- Visually inspect the fuel tank for any damage or deformation.
Is the fuel tank OK?
- Yes: GO to 19 .
- No: INSTALL a new fuel tank. REFER to FUEL TANK .
- INSPECT THE FUEL TANK TRANSFER TUBE CONNECTIONS
- Remove the fuel pump assembly and the fuel level sensor. REFER to FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY and REFER to FUEL LEVEL SENSOR .
- Inspect the fuel tank transfer tube, connections, the fuel pump assembly and the fuel level sensor for any damage or deformation.
Are the fuel tank transfer tube, connections, the fuel pump assembly and the fuel level sensor OK?
- Yes: GO to 20 .
- No: INSTALL a new fuel tank transfer tube, fuel pump assembly or fuel level sensor as necessary. REFER to FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY and REFER to FUEL LEVEL SENSOR .
- CHECK THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY AND FUEL LEVEL SENSOR
- Inspect the fuel pump assembly and fuel level sensor connector.
- Repair:
- corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
- damaged pins - install new terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
- Reconnect the fuel pump assembly and fuel level sensor connector. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
- Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
- Yes: GO to 21 .
- No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by component connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
- CHECK THE FUEL LEVEL SENDER
- Remove the fuel pump assembly. REFER to FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY .
- Disconnect the fuel level sender input wire from the fuel pump assembly.

NOTE: The fuel level sender resistance measures between 10 ohms ± 2 ohms at the upper stop position and 180 ohms ± 4 ohms at the lower stop position.
Measure the resistance while slowly moving the float arm between the lower and upper stop position:

Does the resistance slowly decrease from approximately 180 ohms to 10 ohms?
- Yes: INSTALL a new fuel pump assembly. REFER to FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY . CLEAR the DTCs .
- No: INSTALL a new fuel level sender (float and card). CLEAR the DTCs .
- CHECK FOR CORRECT IPC OPERATION
- Disconnect and inspect the IPC connector.
- Repair:
- corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
- damaged pins - install new terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
- Reconnect the IPC connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly.
- Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
- Yes: CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSBs . If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no TSBs address this concern, INSTALL a new IPC. REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) .
- No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
