Pinpoint Test AQ: The Safety Belt Warning Chime/The Belt-Minder(R) Does Not Operate Correctly

Pinpoint Test AQ: The Safety Belt Warning Chime Does Not Operate Correctly/The Belt-Minder(R) Feature Does Not Operate Correctly

Normal Operation

The Instrument Cluster (IC) receives the safety belt and Belt-Minder(R) request from the Restraints Control Module (RCM) over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN). The safety belt warning chime sounds for approximately 6 seconds when the driver safety belt is not fastened and the ignition lock cylinder is turned from the OFF/LOCK or ACC to the ON or START position.

The Belt-Minder(R) feature supplements the safety belt warning function and is enabled after the safety belt warning is complete. The Belt-Minder(R) simultaneously sounds the chime and illuminates the safety belt warning lamp in the IC (Instrument Cluster) once the vehicle speed has exceeded 5 km/h (3 mph), and remains active for 5 minutes from the time it is started.

There are two Belt-Minder(R) strategies that are used and implemented by the IC (Instrument Cluster) as commanded by the RCM (Restraints Control Module). The two strategies are designed to provide an increased intensity level of the chime. Belt-Minder(R) A provides 6 one-second sequences of 0.5-second on/0.5 second off for the first minute of the Belt-Minder(R) warning. Belt-Minder(R) B provides 6 one-second sequences of 0.2-second on/0.2-second off then 0.3-second on/0.3-second off for the remainder of the Belt-Minder(R) warning.

The Belt-Minder(R) functions exactly the same for both administrator and MyKey(R) programmed keys except that when MyKey(R) is in use, the driver cannot configure the Belt-Minder(R) off. Additionally, once the Belt-Minder(R) is activated, the Belt-Minder(R) continues to chime periodically (without the 5 minute time out) and the audio system is muted until the driver safety belt is fastened.

NOTE: Be sure that the safety belt/Belt-Minder(R) chime operation is verified with the vehicle moving at least 5 km/h (3 mph).

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Safety belt warning indication concern

- Speedometer concern

- Belt-Minder(R) deactivated

- RCM (Restraints Control Module)

- IC (Instrument Cluster)

- MyKey(R) concern

PINPOINT TEST AQ : THE SAFETY BELT WARNING CHIME IS INOPERATIVE/THE BELT-MINDER(R) FEATURE DOES NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY

NOTE: Make sure that the Belt-Minder(R) is diagnosed using both an administrator key and MyKey(R) key.

AQ1 CHECK THE KEY-IN-IGNITION WARNING CHIME OPERATION

- Ignition OFF.

- With the ignition switch in the OFF position and the key in the ignition lock cylinder, open the LH front door and observe the key-in-ignition warning chime operation.

Does the key-in-ignition warning chime operate correctly?

Yes
GO to AQ2.

No
INSTALL a new IC (Instrument Cluster). REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) . TEST the system for normal operation.

AQ2 CHECK THE SAFETY BELT WARNING INDICATOR FOR CORRECT OPERATION

- Ignition ON.

- Within one minute, buckle then unbuckle the LH front safety belt.

- With the engine running, verify the safety belt warning indicator illuminates with the safety belt unbuckled and turns off when buckled.

Does the safety belt warning indicator operate correctly?

Yes
GO to AQ3.

No
GO to Pinpoint Test K. Pinpoint Test K: The Safety Belt Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On

AQ3 CHECK THE SPEEDOMETER OPERATION

- Start the engine.

- Drive the vehicle and verify that the speedometer is operating correctly.

Does the speedometer operate correctly?

Yes
GO to AQ4.

No
GO to Pinpoint Test F. Pinpoint Test F: The Speedometer Is Inoperative

AQ4 CHECK THE BELT-MINDER(R) CONFIGURATION

NOTE: Verify that an administrator key is used for this test and not a MyKey(R) programmed key. When a MyKey(R) programmed key is used, the Belt-Minder(R) is automatically turned on and cannot be disabled (if previously disabled by an administrator, the Belt-Minder(R) remains disabled when an administrator key is used).

- Verify that the Belt-Minder(R) is activated or configured on. Refer to Belt-Minder(R) Deactivating/Activating to configure without a scan tool.

Is the Belt-Minder(R) configured on?

Yes
INSTALL a new RCM (Restraints Control Module). TEST the system for normal operation.

No
ACTIVATE the Belt-Minder(R). REFER to Belt-Minder(R) Deactivating/Activating . TEST the system for normal operation.
