Pinpoint Test

  1. RETRIEVE THE RECORDED Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) FROM THE Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) SELF-TEST
    1. Using a scan tool, perform the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) self-test.
    • Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded? 
    1. Yes:  If Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) U0100:00 is present, REFER to Diagnostic Routine AR .

      If Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P1706:62 is present, GO to  3 on page 2.

    2. No:  GO to on page 2.
  2. RETRIEVE AND RECORD THE Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) FROM THE Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) SELF-TEST
    1. Using a scan tool, perform the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) self-test.
    • Are any Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded? 
    1. Yes:  REFER to the appropriate Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual INTRODUCTION - GASOLINE MODELS .
    2. No:  GO to on page 2.
  3. CHECK THE PARK DETECT INPUT TO THE Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC)
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Disconnect: Selector Lever.
    3. Connect a fused jumper wire:

    4. Ignition ON.
    5. Monitor the PRNDL indicator with the jumper wire installed and with the jumper wire removed.
    • Does the PRNDL display P with the jumper wire connected and blank with the jumper wire removed? 
    1. Yes:  REMOVE the jumper wire. INSTALL a new selector lever. REFER to or REFER to SELECTOR LEVER (Select Shift).
    2. No:  REMOVE the jumper wire. GO to on page 3.
  4. CHECK THE SELECTOR LEVER INPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Disconnect: Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC).
    3. Measure:

    • Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 
    1. Yes:  GO to on page 3.
    2. No:  REPAIR the circuit.
  5. CHECK THE SELECTOR LEVER INPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
    1. Measure:

    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 
    1. Yes:  GO to on page 4.
    2. No:  REPAIR the circuit.
  6. CHECK FOR CORRECT Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) OPERATION
  1. Disconnect and inspect the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) connector.
  2. Repair:
    • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
    • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
    • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
  3. Reconnect the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly.
  4. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
  1. Yes:  CHECK On-Line Automotive Service Information System (OASIS) for any applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs). If a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) instructions. If no Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) address this concern, INSTALL a new Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). REFER to INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) .
  2. No:  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
