Pinpoint Test

  1. RETRIEVE THE RECORDED Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) FROM THE Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) SELF-TEST
    1. Using a scan tool, perform the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) self-test.
    • Is Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) U0212:00 recorded? 
    1. Yes:  REFER to Diagnostic Routine AZ .
    2. No:  GO to on page 2.
  2. RETRIEVE THE RECORDED Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) FROM THE Steering Column Control Module (SCCM) SELF-TEST
    1. Using a scan tool, perform the Steering Column Control Module (SCCM) self-test.
    • Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded? 
    1. Yes:  For Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B137F:09, INSTALL a new Left Hand (LH) steering wheel switch. REFER to STEERING WHEEL SWITCH .

      For Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B137F:11 or Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B137F:17, GO to on page 2.

    2. No:  GO to on page 2.
  3. CHECK THE Steering Column Control Module (SCCM) OUTPUT AT THE Left Hand (LH) STEERING WHEEL SWITCH
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Disconnect: Left Hand (LH) Steering Wheel Switch.
    3. Ignition ON.
    4. Measure:

    • Is the voltage approximately 5 volts? 
    1. Yes:  INSTALL a new Left Hand (LH) steering wheel switch. REFER to STEERING WHEEL SWITCH .
    2. No:  GO to on page 3.
  4. CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER SWITCH SIGNAL CIRCUIT BETWEEN THE Left Hand (LH) STEERING WHEEL SWITCH AND THE UPPER CLOCKSPRING FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Remove the driver air bag module. REFER to DRIVER AIR BAG MODULE .
    3. Disconnect: Upper Clockspring C218B.
    4. Measure:

    • Is greater than 10,000 ohms? 
    1. Yes:  GO to on page 3.
    2. No:  REPAIR the steering wheel harness message center signal circuit.
  5. CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER SWITCH SIGNAL CIRCUIT BETWEEN THE Left Hand (LH) STEERING WHEEL SWITCH AND THE UPPER CLOCKSPRING FOR AN OPEN
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Measure:

    • Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 
    1. Yes:  GO to on page 4.
    2. No:  REPAIR the steering wheel harness message center signal circuit.
  6. CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER SWITCH RETURN CIRCUIT BETWEEN THE Left Hand (LH) STEERING WHEEL SWITCH AND THE UPPER CLOCKSPRING FOR AN OPEN
    1. Measure:

    • Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 
    1. Yes:  GO to on page 5.
    2. No:  REPAIR the steering wheel harness message center return circuit.
  7. CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER SWITCH SIGNAL CIRCUIT IN THE CLOCKSPRING FOR AN OPEN
    1. Measure:

    • Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 
    1. Yes:  GO to on page 6.
    2. No:  INSTALL a new clockspring. REFER to CLOCKSPRING .
  8. CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER SWITCH RETURN CIRCUIT IN THE CLOCKSPRING FOR AN OPEN
    1. Measure:

    • Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 
    1. Yes:  GO to on page 6.
    2. No:  INSTALL a new clockspring. REFER to CLOCKSPRING .
  9. CHECK FOR CORRECT Steering Column Control Module (SCCM) OPERATION
  1. Disconnect and inspect all Steering Column Control Module (SCCM) connectors.
  2. Repair:
    • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
    • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
    • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
  3. Reconnect the Steering Column Control Module (SCCM) connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
  4. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
  1. Yes:  CHECK On-Line Automotive Service Information System (OASIS) for any applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs). If a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) instructions. If no Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) address this concern, INSTALL a new Steering Column Control Module (SCCM). REFER to STEERING COLUMN CONTROL MODULE (SCCM) .
  2. No:  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
