Symptom Chart - NVH

NOTE: NVH symptoms should be identified using the diagnostic tools that are available. For a list of these tools, an explanation of their uses and a glossary of common terms, refer to NOISE, VIBRATION & HARSHNESS article. Since it is possible any one of multiple systems may be the cause of a symptom, it may be necessary to use a process of elimination type of diagnostic approach to pinpoint the responsible system. If this is not the causal system for the symptom, refer to NOISE, VIBRATION & HARSHNESS article for the next likely system and continue diagnosis.
Symptom Chart - NVH

Condition Possible Sources Action
  • Rattle - occurs at idle or at light acceleration from a stop
  • Damaged Electronically Controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (eCVT) insulators
  • Loose or damaged transaxle NVH shield
  • CHECK the transaxle NVH shield for loose fasteners or damage. REFER to NVH SHIELD  in this service information.
  • Loose inspection plate or dust cover plate
  • CHECK for loose bolts. TIGHTEN to specifications.
  • Loose flexplate-to-converter nuts
  • CHECK for loose nuts. TIGHTEN to specifications.
  • Whine - pitch increases with vehicle speed
  • Damaged or worn planetary or sun gear
  • INSPECT the eCVT  for wear or damage. DRAIN and FILTER the eCVT  fluid. INSPECT for metal debris and CHECK fluid condition. If excessive metal debris is present, INSTALL a new transaxle as necessary. REFER to TRANSAXLE  in this service information.
  • Whine - the pitch changes with engine speed
  • Incorrect transmission fluid level
  • CHECK that the eCVT  is filled to the correct level. ADD transmission fluid as necessary.
  • Clunk - occurs when shifting from PARK to a DRIVE or REVERSE position
  • Damaged transmission insulators
  • Bump - occurs when shifting from park to a drive or reverse position. Similar to Clunk but with no sound
  • Initial gear engagement
  • Acceptable condition.
  • Vibration - a high frequency (20-80 Hz) that is felt through the seat or selector lever. Changes with engine speed
  • Selector lever cable incorrectly routed, grounded out or loose
