Exhaust Manifold - RH: Removal

All vehicles 

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING AND LIFTING .
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly. For additional information, refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION AND FILTERING .
  4. Remove the throttle body (TB). For additional information, refer to FUEL CHARGING AND CONTROLS - 4.6L (3V) .
  5. Remove the starter. For additional information, refer to STARTING SYSTEM .
  6. Remove the 2 RH catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold nuts.
  7. Remove the 2 LH catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold nuts.
  8. Remove the 6 pin-type retainers and the radiator sight shield.
  9. Using a suitable belt tensioner release tool, rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner clockwise and position the accessory drive belt aside from the generator pulley.

  11. Remove the 2 outer generator bracket bolts.
  12. Remove the 2 lower generator nuts.
  13. Disconnect the generator electrical connector and pin-type retainer.
  14. Position the B+ terminal cover aside and remove the B+ terminal nut.
    • Remove the generator.
  15. Install the special tools.

    Bullitt vehicles 

  17. Remove the 4 nuts and the strut tower cross brace.

    All vehicles 

  19. Install the special tool.

    NOTE: Both the RH and LH engine support insulator nuts must be removed to allow the engine to be raised.
    NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.
  21. Remove the RH and LH engine support insulator nuts.

  23. Using the special tool, raise the engine 40 mm (1.57 in).

  25. Remove the nut and the ground wire from the stud bolt.

    Vehicles with automatic transmission 

  27. Remove the nut and position aside the transmission cooler tube bracket.

    All vehicles 

  29. Remove the 2 bolts, 2 stud bolts and the RH engine support bracket.
  30. Remove the 8 nuts and the exhaust manifold.
    • Discard the nuts and gaskets.
  31. Clean and inspect the RH exhaust manifold. For additional information, refer to ENGINE SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION .
  32. Remove and discard the 8 RH exhaust manifold studs.
  33. CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These may cause scratches and gouges resulting in leak paths. Use a plastic scraper to clean the sealing surfaces.
  34. Clean the sealing surfaces with metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging.
