Engine Front Cover: Installation

- Clean and inspect the gasket mating surfaces. Use silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep and a plastic or wooden scraping tool. Follow the directions on the packaging.
- Position a new front cover gasket.
- Apply silicone gasket and sealant to the oil pan and engine block mating surfaces.
- Apply silicone gasket and sealant to the front cover in 2 places.
- Position the front cover and connect the coolant bypass hose to the thermostat housing.
- Loosely install the 5 bolts and the 5 stud bolts.
- Use the Front Cover Aligner, align the front cover.
- Tighten the bolts and stud bolts to 19 Nm (168 lb-in).
- Install the 5 engine block cradle-to-engine front cover bolts.
- Tighten to 14 Nm (124 lb-in).
- Connect the CKP sensor and attach the 2 wiring retainers.
- Install the accessory drive belt idler pulley and the bolt.
- Tighten to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft).
- Connect the lower radiator hose to the coolant pump.
- Connect the heater hose to the coolant pump.
- Connect the upper radiator hose.
- Install the crankshaft front oil seal. For additional information, refer to Crankshaft Front Seal .
- Fill the engine with clean engine oil.
- Fill and bleed the engine cooling system. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING .
NOTE:
Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths.
NOTE:
If not secured within 4 minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned. To clean the sealing area, use silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage.
NOTE:
Apply thread sealant to the stud bolts and make sure that the stud bolts are installed in their original positions.
