PINPOINT TEST B: DTCs C1145, C1155 AND C1230 - WHEEL SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT FAILURE

CAUTION:
Use the Flex Probe Kit for all test connections to prevent damage to the wiring terminals. Do not use standard multi-meter probes.
- B1 CHECK THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT(S) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: ABS Module C135
- Disconnect: Suspect Wheel Speed Sensor(s)
- Key in ON position.
- For DTC C1145
, measure the voltage between ground and:
- ABS module C135-5, circuit VCA03 (VT/WH), harness side.
- ABS module C135-6, circuit RCA17 (YE), harness side.
- For DTC C1155
, measure the voltage between ground and:
- ABS module C135-3, circuit VCA05 (GY/VT), harness side.
- ABS module C135-4, circuit RCA19 (VT), harness side.
- For DTC C1230
, measure the voltage between ground and:
- ABS module C135-21, circuit VCA14 (WH/BN), harness side.
- ABS module C135-14, circuit RCA21 (BN/GN), harness side.
- Is voltage present?
- YES : REPAIR the affected circuit(s) for a short to voltage. CLEAR the DTCs and REPEAT the self-test with the brake pedal not applied.
- NO : Go to B2.
- B2 CHECK THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT(S) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Key in OFF position.
- For DTC C1145
, measure the resistance between ground and:
- ABS module C135-5, circuit VCA03 (VT/WH), harness side.
- ABS module C135-6, circuit RCA17 (YE), harness side.
- For DTC C1155
, measure the resistance between ground and:
- ABS module C135-3, circuit VCA05 (GY/VT), harness side.
- ABS module C135-4, circuit RCA19 (VT), harness side.
- For DTC C1230
, measure the resistance between ground and:
- ABS module C135-21, circuit VCA14 (WH/BN), harness side.
- ABS module C135-14, circuit RCA21 (BN/GN), harness side.
- Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms?
- YES : Go to B3.
- NO : REPAIR the affected circuit(s) for a short to ground. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test with the brake pedal not applied.
- B3 CHECK THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT(S) FOR AN OPEN
- For DTC C1145
, measure the resistance between:
- ABS module C135-5, circuit VCA03 (VT/WH), harness side and LF wheel speed sensor C150-2, circuit VCA03 (VT/WH), harness side.
- ABS module C135-6, circuit RCA17 (YE), harness side and LF wheel speed sensor C150-1, circuit RCA17 (YE), harness side.
- For DTC C1155
, measure the resistance between:
- ABS module C135-3, circuit VCA05 (GY/VT), harness side and RF wheel speed sensor C150-2, circuit VCA05 (GY/VT), harness side.
- ABS module C135-4, circuit RCA19 (VT), harness side and RF wheel speed sensor C150-1, circuit RCA19 (VT), harness side.
- For DTC C1230
, measure the resistance between:
- ABS module C135-21, circuit VCA14 (WH/BN), harness side and rear wheel speed sensor C455-2, circuit VCA14 (WH/BN), harness side.
- ABS module C135-14, circuit RCA21 (BN/GN), harness side and rear wheel speed sensor C455-1, circuit RCA21 (BN/GN), harness side.
- Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?
- YES : Go to B4.
- NO : REPAIR the affected circuit(s) for an open. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test with the brake pedal not applied.
- For DTC C1145
, measure the resistance between:
- B4 CHECK WHEEL SPEED SENSOR RESISTANCE
- For DTC C1145 , measure the resistance between RF wheel speed sensor C160-1, component side and RF wheel speed sensor C160-2, component side.
- For DTC C1155 , measure the resistance between LF wheel speed sensor C150-1, component side and LF wheel speed sensor C150-2, component side.
- For DTC C1230 , measure the resistance between rear wheel speed sensor C455-1, component side and rear wheel speed sensor C455-2, component side.
- Is the resistance between 800 and 1400 ohms (front RWD), 380 and 480 ohms (front 4WD) or 800 and 2500 ohms (rear all)?
- YES : Go to B5.
- NO
: INSTALL a new wheel speed sensor. For the front wheel speed sensor (4WD), REFER to Wheel Speed Sensor - Front, Four Wheel Drive (4WD) . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test with the brake pedal not applied.
For the front wheel speed sensor (RWD), REFER to Wheel Speed Sensor - Front, Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test with the brake pedal not applied.
For the rear wheel speed sensor, REFER to Wheel Speed Sensor - Rear . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test with the brake pedal not applied.
- B5 CHECK WHEEL SPEED SENSOR HARNESS FOR DAMAGE
- Inspect the wheel speed sensor harness at the affected wheel end for chafing or other wiring damage.
- Is damage found?
- YES
: INSTALL a new wheel speed sensor. For the front wheel speed sensor (4WD), REFER to Wheel Speed Sensor - Front, Four Wheel Drive (4WD) . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test with the brake pedal not applied.
For the front wheel speed sensor (RWD), REFER to Wheel Speed Sensor - Front, Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test with the brake pedal not applied.
For the rear wheel speed sensor, REFER to Wheel Speed Sensor - Rear . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test with the brake pedal not applied.
- NO : Go to B6.
- B6 CHECK FOR CORRECT ABS MODULE OPERATION
- Disconnect all ABS connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion.
- pushed-out pins.
- spread terminals.
- Connect all ABS connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
- YES : INSTALL a new ABS module. REFER to Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Module . TEST the system for normal operation.
- NO : The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test with the brake pedal not applied.
