Fuel Rail: Removal

WARNING:
Do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel-related component. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and may be ignited. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
WARNING:
Fuel in the fuel system remains under high pressure even when the engine is not running. Before working on or disconnecting any of the fuel lines or fuel system components, the fuel system pressure must be relieved. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
CAUTION:
If the fuel rail is used as a leverage device, damage may occur to the fuel rail. Care must be taken when working around the supply manifold.
- Remove the intake manifold. For additional information, refer to ENGINE - 4.0L SINGLE OVERHEAD CAMSHAFT (SOHC) article.
- Disconnect the fuel supply tube spring lock coupling. For additional information, refer to FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION article.
- Disconnect the 6 fuel injector electrical connectors.
- Remove the 4 bolts and the fuel rail and fuel injectors as an assembly.
- To install, tighten to 23 Nm (17 lb-ft).
- If necessary, remove the 4 fuel rail supply tube-to-fuel rail bolts and the fuel rail supply tube. Discard the O-ring seals.
- To install, tighten to 6 Nm (53 lb-in).
- If necessary, remove the fuel injectors from the fuel rail. For additional information, refer to Fuel Injectors in this article.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
CAUTION:
Use O-ring seals that are made of special fuel-resistant material. The use of ordinary O-ring seals can cause the fuel system to leak. Do not reuse O-ring seals.
NOTE:
Lubricate the new O-ring seals with clean engine oil.
NOTE:
Use new fasteners to attach the fuel rail.
