Extension Housing: Removal

With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING AND LIFTING article.
Remove the drain plug and drain the transmission fluid.

NOTE: To maintain initial driveshaft balance, index-mark the driveshaft to the rear axle pinion flange so it can be installed in its original position.

Remove and support the rear driveshaft. For additional information, refer to DRIVESHAFT article.
Remove the transfer case, if equipped. For additional information, refer to TRANSFER CASE article.
Using the special tool, support the transmission.

- Secure the transmission with a strap.
Remove the 6 crossmember bolts.

Remove the transmission mount nuts, then remove the crossmember.

Remove the transmission mount.

- Remove the bolts.
- Reposition the exhaust mounting bracket.

NOTE: Remove sealant from mating surfaces.

NOTE: Rear wheel drive (RWD) shown, four wheel drive (4WD) similar.

Remove the extension housing.
