WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2007 Ford Ranger. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. I1 CHECK THE BRAKE ON/OFF (4X4_BOO) PID
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Using the scan tool, monitor the 4X4_BOO PID.
    • Does the PID read ON with the brake pedal released?
    1. YES  : Go to  I3.
    2. NO  : Go to  I2.
  2. I2 CHECK CIRCUIT CCB15 (BN/GN) FOR VOLTAGE
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: 4X4 Control Module C281A
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between 4X4 control module C281A-14, circuit CCB15 (BN/GN), harness side and ground while applying and releasing the brake pedal.
    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts with the brake pedal applied and 0 volt with the brake pedal released?
    1. YES  : Go to  I5.
    2. NO  : VERIFY SJB fuse 32 (5A) is OK. If not,

      Go to  I4.

  3. I3 CHECK CIRCUIT CCB15 (BN/GN) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: BPP Switch C278
    • Key in ON position.
    • Using the scan tool, monitor the 4X4_BOO PID.
    • Does the PID read ON?
    1. YES  : REPAIR circuit CCB15 (BN/GN). CLEAR the DTCs and CARRY OUT the self-test with the brake pedal not applied.
    2. NO  : Go to  I4.
  4. I4 CHECK CIRCUIT CCB15 (BN/GN) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: 4X4 Control Module C281A
    • Measure the resistance between BPP switch C278-4, circuit CCB15 (BN/GN) harness side and ground.
    • Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms?
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new BPP switch. REFER to EXTERIOR LIGHTING article. CLEAR the DTCs and CARRY OUT the self-test with the brake pedal not applied.
    2. NO  : REPAIR circuit CCB15 (BN/GN). CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test with the brake pedal not applied.
  5. I5 CHECK FOR CORRECT 4X4 CONTROL MODULE OPERATION
    • Check for:
      • corrosion.
      • pushed-out pins.
      • spread terminals.
    • Connect 4X4 control module connector and make sure it is seated correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present by carrying out the self-test with the brake pedal not applied.
    • Is the concern still present?
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new 4X4 control module. REFER to 4X4 Control Module in this article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. CARRY OUT the self-test with the brake pedal not applied
