Lower Intake Manifold: Removal

  1. Drain the engine cooling system. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING article.
  2. Remove both the valve covers. For additional information, refer to Valve Cover - RH  and Valve Cover - LH  in this article.
  3. Disconnect the upper radiator hose, heater hose and coolant bypass hose.
  4. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connector.
  5. Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector and detach the wiring retainer from the stud bolt.
  6. Disconnect the fuel injector electrical connectors and position the engine wiring harness aside.
  7. Release the fuel pressure and disconnect the fuel tube spring lock coupling. For additional information, refer to FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION article.
  8. Loosen the rocker arm bolts.

  9. NOTE: Identify the location of each push rod. Each push rod is to be installed in the original location to prevent premature wear.
  10. Remove all the push rods.
  11. Remove the bolts from the lower intake manifold.
  12. NOTE: Gently loosen the intake manifold to separate the silicone sealant from the cylinder block.
  13. Remove the lower intake manifold.
  14. Remove and discard the intake manifold gaskets and end seals.
  15. CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges, which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.
    NOTE: To clean the sealing area, use silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Observe all warnings and cautions and follow all application directions contained on the packaging of the silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep.
  16. Clean the lower intake manifold gasket mating surfaces.
