In-Vehicle Servicing: Camshaft: Installation

- Install the camshaft.
- Install the camshaft thrust plate and the bolts.
- Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- Measure the camshaft end play. For additional information, refer to ENGINE SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION article.
- Install the timing chain. For additional information, refer to Timing Chain in this article.
- Install the camshaft synchronizer assembly. For additional information, refer to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS article.
- Install the hydraulic lash adjusters. For additional information, refer to Hydraulic Lash Adjuster in this article.
- Install the radiator assembly. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING article.
- Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES article.
- Drain the engine oil.
- Fill the engine with clean engine oil.
- Fill and bleed the cooling system. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING article.
CAUTION:
Damage to the camshaft and/or the camshaft bearings can occur if the camshaft is allowed to drop on the bearing surface or cylinder block.
NOTE:
Lubricate the camshaft, the camshaft bearings and the camshaft position sensor drive gear with clean engine oil prior to installation.
NOTE:
Lubricate the camshaft thrust plate with clean engine oil prior to installation.
CAUTION:
If a new camshaft is installed, always add the rest of the clean engine oil to the engine oil by pouring it through the distributor hole onto the camshaft drive gear. Run engine at idle for 5 minutes before driving vehicle.
NOTE:
Completely coat camshaft synchronizer gear teeth with clean engine oil.
