Inspection and Verification
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2007 Ford Pickup, 2007 Ford F550 Super Duty, 2007 Ford F450 Super Duty, and 2007 Ford Cab & Chassis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Verify the customer concern.
- Visually inspect the following for obvious signs of electrical damage.VISUAL INSPECTION CHART
Electrical - Battery junction box (BJB) fuse(s):
- 10 (10A) (powertrain control module [PCM])
- 11 (10A) (anti-lock brake system [ABS] module)
- 22 (60A) (ABS module)
- 23 (60A) (ABS module)
- Central junction box (CJB) fuse(s):
- 2 (10A) (instrument cluster)
- 19 (10A) (vehicle security module, four wheel drive [4WD] module)
- 20 (15A) (trailer brake control [TBC] module)
- 22 (20A) (PCM)
- 24 (15A) (EATC)
- 26 (10A) (restraints control module [RCM])
- 27 (15A) (parking aid module)
- 28 (10A) (TBC module)
- 33 (15A) (instrument cluster, 4WD control module)
- 34 (10A) (EATC)
- 45 (10A) (instrument cluster, 4WD control module)
- 101 (30A) (TBC module)
- 102 (30A) (vehicle security module)
- 116 (30A) (instrument cluster, PCM, 4WD control module)
- Data link connector (DLC)
- Circuitry
- Battery junction box (BJB) fuse(s):
- If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
- If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the DLC.
If the scan tool does not communicate with the VCM:
- Check the VCM connection to the vehicle.
- Check the scan tool connection to the VCM.
- Go to Pinpoint Test L , to diagnose no power to the scan tool.
- Carry out the network test:
- If the network test passes, retrieve and record the continuous memory DTCs and proceed to Step 6.
- If the network test fails, go to Symptom Chart to identify the module not communicating.
- If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the Communication Network Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index. For all other DTCs, refer to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES article.
- If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, go to Symptom Chart .
NOTE:
Make sure to use the latest scan tool software release.
NOTE:
The vehicle communication module (VCM) LED prove-out confirms power and ground from the DLC are provided to the VCM.
NOTE:
During the network test, the scan tool will first attempt to communicate with the PCM, after establishing communication with the PCM, the scan tool will then attempt to communicate with all other modules on the vehicle.
NOTE:
DTC U1900 will set in a module that is reporting a communication fault from another module on the data bus. The module that reports the fault is not the problem module.
COMMUNICATION NETWORK DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTC) INDEX
| DTC | Description | Source | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| U0073 | Control Module Communication Buss Off | ABS module | DTC U0073 indicates the module could not communicate on the network at a point in time. The fault is not currently present. CLEAR the DTC. REPEAT the network test with scan tool. |
| U0073 | Control Module Communication Buss Off | Instrument cluster | DTC U0073 indicates the module could not communicate on the network at a point in time. The fault is not currently present. CLEAR the DTC. REPEAT the network test with can tool. |
| U1900 | CAN Communication Bus Fault-Recieve Error | ABS module | For module that failed network test, go to Symptom Chart . |
| U1900 | CAN Communication Bus Fault-Recieve Error | Instrument cluster | For module that failed network test, go to Symptom Chart . |
| U1900 | CAN Communication Bus Fault-Receive Error | TBC module | For module that failed network test, go to Symptom Chart . |
| U1950 | UBP Communication Bus Fault | Vehicle security module | For module that failed network test, go to Symptom Chart . |
| U2023 | Fault Received From External Node | Instrument cluster | RETRIEVE and FOLLOW non-network DTCs from other modules. REFER to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES article. |
| U2226 | UBP Invalid Data From Node ID $10 (PCM) | Vehicle security module | RETRIEVE and FOLLOW non-network DTCs from the PCM. REFER to INTRODUCTION - GASOLINE ENGINES article. |
| All other DTCs | - | - | REFER to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES article. |
