Driveshaft Universal Joint - Double Cardan: Assembly

  1. Position the spider in the driveshaft end yoke, and position the bearing cup on the spider trunion.

  3. Using the special tool, press the bearing cup far enough into the driveshaft end yoke to place the opposite bearing cup on the spider trunion.

  5. Position the opposite bearing cup on the spider trunion.

  7. Using the special tool, press the bearing cup to just below the snap ring groove.

  9. Install the new snap ring.
  10. Using the special tool, press the opposite bearing cup to just below the snap ring groove.

  12. Install the new snap ring.
  13. NOTE: Align the index marks made during disassembly.
  14. Position the driveshaft center yoke on the spider.
  15. Using the special tool, press the bearing cups into position.
    • Install the snap rings.

  17. Install the original spring.

    NOTE: Align the index marks made during disassembly.
  19. Position the remaining spider, the centering flange yoke and the bearing cup.

  21. Using the special tool, press the bearing cup far enough into the yoke to place the opposite bearing cup on the spider trunion.

  23. Position the opposite bearing cup on the spider trunion.

  25. Using the special tool, press the bearing cup to just below the snap ring groove.

  27. Install the snap ring.
  28. Using the special tool, press the opposite bearing cup to just below the snap ring groove.

  30. Install the snap ring.
  31. Position the bearing cup on the spider trunion in the centering flange yoke.

  33. Using the special tool, press the bearing cup into position.

    NOTE: The assembly requires centering to install the final bearing cup, due to spring pressure.
    NOTE: Position the jaws of the special tool into the driveshaft center yoke bearing cup bores.
  35. With the special tools in position, hand-tighten the 2-jaw puller to center the spider trunion in the bore.

  37. Using the special tool, install the final bearing cup.
    • Remove the special tools.

    NOTE: If necessary, tap the yokes with a soft-faced hammer to seat the bearing cups.
  39. Install the remaining snap rings.

  41. Move the end yoke through the working angles to verify freedom of movement.
