Pinpoint Test G: DTC B1681 - Pats Transceiver Module Signal Is Not Received (Damaged, Not Connected, Or Damaged Wiring)

CAUTION: Use the correct probe adaptor(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adaptor(s) may damage the connector.
  1. G1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCS FROM THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND SELF-TESTS 
    • Check for recorded instrument cluster continuous and on-demand self-test DTCs.
    • Is DTC B1681 retrieved? 

    Yes  : GO to G2.

    No  : The system is OK.

  2. G2 INSPECT THE PATS TRANSCEIVER FOR CORRECT INSTALLATION 

    Yes  : GO to G3.

    No  : CORRECT the installation. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

  3. G3 CHECK THE PATS TRANSCEIVER CIRCUIT CBP18 (GY/OG) FOR VOLTAGE 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: PATS Transceiver C252.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the PATS transceiver C252-1, circuit CBP18 (GY/OG), harness side and ground.

    • Is the voltage greater than 9 volts? 

    Yes  : GO to G4.

    No  : VERIFY the SJB fuse 26 (7.5A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

  4. G4 CHECK THE PATS TRANSCEIVER GROUND CIRCUIT GD116 (BK/VT) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Measure the resistance between the PATS transceiver C252-2, circuit GD116 (BK/VT), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes  : GO to G5.

    No  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

  5. G5 CHECK THE PATS TRANSCEIVER RECEIVE CIRCUIT VRT24 (YE/OG) FOR VOLTAGE 
    • Connect: PATS Transceiver C252.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage by back-probing between the PATS transceiver C252-4, circuit VRT24 (YE/OG), harness side and ground.

    • Is the voltage greater than 9 volts? 

    Yes  : GO to G7.

    No  : GO to G6.

  6. G6 CHECK THE PATS TRANSCEIVER RECEIVE CIRCUIT VRT24 (YE/OG) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: PATS Transceiver C252.
    • Measure the resistance between the PATS transceiver C252-4, circuit VRT24 (YE/OG), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance greater than 100 ohms? 

    Yes  : GO to G8.

    No  : GO to G7.

  7. G7 CHECK CIRCUIT VRT24 (YE/OG) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DISCONNECTED 
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220.
    • Measure the resistance between the PATS transceiver C252-4, circuit VRT24 (YE/OG), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 

    Yes  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . PROGRAM the keys. REFER to KEY PROGRAMMING USING DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT . CARRY OUT a parameter reset on both modules. REFER to PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) PARAMETER RESET . CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.

    No  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

  8. G8 CHECK CIRCUIT VRT24 (YE/OG) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220.
    • Measure the resistance between the PATS transceiver C252-4, circuit VRT24 (YE/OG), harness side and the instrument cluster C220-3, circuit VRT24 (YE/OG), harness side.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes  : GO to G9.

    No  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

  9. G9 CHECK THE PATS TRANSCEIVER TRANSMIT CIRCUIT VRT23 (VT/GY) FOR VOLTAGE 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Connect: PATS Transceiver C252.
    • Connect: Instrument Cluster C220.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage by back-probing between the PATS transceiver C252-C, circuit VRT23 (VT/GY), harness side and ground.

    • Is the voltage greater than 9 volts? 

    Yes  : GO to G12.

    No  : GO to G10.

  10. G10 CHECK THE PATS TRANSCEIVER TRANSMIT CIRCUIT VRT23 (VT/GY) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: PATS Transceiver C252.
    • Measure the resistance between the PATS transceiver C252-3, circuit VRT23 (VT/GY), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance greater than 100 ohms? 

    Yes  : GO to G12.

    No  : GO to G11.

  11. G11 CHECK CIRCUIT VRT23 (VT/GY) FOR SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DISCONNECTED 
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220.
    • Measure the resistance between the PATS transceiver C252-3, circuit VRT23 (VT/GY), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 

    Yes  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . PROGRAM the keys. REFER to KEY PROGRAMMING USING DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT . CARRY OUT a parameter reset on both modules. REFER to PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) PARAMETER RESET . TEST the system for normal operation. If the vehicle is equipped with the valet feature, PROGRAM the third key (if available) or INSTRUCT the customer on how to carry out this procedure. REFER to KEY PROGRAMMING USING TWO PROGRAMMED KEYS .

    No  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

  12. G12 CHECK THE PATS TRANSMIT CIRCUIT VRT23 (VT/GY) FOR CORRECT OPERATION 
    • Connect: PATS Transceiver C252.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster Active Command.
    • Trigger the instrument cluster active command transceiver transmit on while measuring the voltage by back probing between the PATS transceiver C252-3, circuit VRT23 (VT/GY), harness side and ground.

    • Does the voltage drop from greater than 9 volts to less than 1 volt when the instrument cluster active command transceiver transmit on is triggered ON? 

    Yes  : GO to G14.

    No  : GO to G13.

  13. G13 CHECK CIRCUIT VRT23 (VT/GY) FOR AN OPEN BETWEEN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER AND THE PATS TRANSCEIVER 
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220.
    • Measure the resistance between the PATS transceiver C252-3, circuit VRT23 (VT/GY), harness side and the instrument cluster C220-4, circuit VRT23 (VT/GY), harness side.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . PROGRAM the keys. REFER to KEY PROGRAMMING USING DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT . CARRY OUT a parameter reset on both modules. REFER to PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) PARAMETER RESET . TEST the system for normal operation. If the vehicle is equipped with the valet feature, PROGRAM the third key (if available) or INSTRUCT the customer on how to carry out this procedure. REFER to KEY PROGRAMMING USING TWO PROGRAMMED KEYS .

    No  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

  14. G14 CHECK THE PATS WITH A NEW PATS TRANSCEIVER INSTALLED 

    Yes  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . CYCLE the key to ON using two PATS keys. If required, PROGRAM the keys. REFER to KEY PROGRAMMING USING DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT . CARRY OUT a parameter reset on both modules. REFER to PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) PARAMETER RESET . If the vehicle is equipped with the valet feature, PROGRAM the 3rd key (if available) or INSTRUCT the customer on how to carry out this procedure. REFER to KEY PROGRAMMING USING TWO PROGRAMMED KEYS .

    No  : The system is OK.
