Removal and Installation

CAUTION: Do not allow the steering column shaft to rotate while the intermediate shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring can result. If there is evidence that the steering column shaft has rotated the clockspring must be removed and recentered. For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .

    All vehicles 

  1. Turn the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position.
  2. Depower the supplemental restraint system (SRS). For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .
  3. Remove the multifunction switch. For additional information, refer to STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES .
  4. Install the ignition lock cylinder and remove the key.
  5. Disconnect the ignition switch electrical connector.

  6. Disconnect the clockspring electrical connectors.

  7. Vehicles with 5-speed automatic transmission 

  8. Disconnect the transmission range indicator from the steering column.
    1. Remove the bolt.
    2. Disconnect the cable and position the range indicator aside.

    3. All vehicles with automatic transmission 

  9. Disconnect the shift cable from the steering column.
    1. Disconnect the shift cable from the steering column shift tube lever.
    2. Disconnect the shift cable from the steering column bracket.

  10. Disconnect the overdrive electrical connector.

  11. All vehicles 

  12. Disconnect the brake shift interlock electrical connector.

  13. CAUTION: Make sure that the ignition lock cylinder has been re-installed and the key is removed to prevent column rotation or damage to the clockspring can result.
  14. Remove and discard the steering column intermediate shaft bolt.
    • To install, tighten to 25 Nm (19 lb-ft).

  15. Remove the 4 nuts and the steering column.
    • To install, tighten to 15 Nm (12 lb-ft).

  16. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
