Pinpoint Test D: The Speed Control Does Not Disengage When The Clutch Is Applied
- D1 VERIFY SPEED CONTROL DEACTIVATION
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: PCM Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) PID.
- Drive the vehicle and engage the speed control.
- Monitor the PCM TPS PID voltage while applying the clutch pedal to disengage the speed control.
- Does the PID display a return to base TPS voltage?
Yes : INFORM the customer that applying the clutch pedal only disengages the speed control and the brakes must be used to slow the vehicle down.
No : GO to D2.
- D2 CHECK THE SPEED CONTROL CABLE/ACCELERATOR CABLE
- Key in OFF position.
- Visually inspect the speed control cable connections, the throttle body linkage, and the speed control actuator pulley cover.
- Are the speed control cable connections, the throttle body linkage, and the speed control actuator pulley cover OK?
NOTE: Make sure the floor mat, insulation, wiring harnesses location, and other item do not interfere with the accelerator pedal and linkage.Yes : GO to D3.
No : INSTALL a new speed control cable or accelerator cable. To INSTALL a new speed control cable, REFER to SPEED CONTROL CABLE in this article. TEST the system for normal operation. To INSTALL a new accelerator cable, REFER to ACCELERATION CONTROL . TEST the system for normal operation.
- D3 VERIFY AN OPEN CIRCUIT TO THE SPEED CONTROL ACTUATOR
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Speed Control Actuator C122.
- Key in ON position.
- Apply the clutch.
- Measure the resistance between the speed control actuator C122-2, circuit 199 (LB/YE), harness side and ground.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes : INSTALL a new speed control actuator. REFER to SPEED CONTROL ACTUATOR in this article. TEST the system for normal operation.
No : GO to D4.
- D4 CHECK THE CPP SWITCH
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: CPP Switch C2070.
- Apply the clutch.
- Measure the resistance between the CPP switch pin 2, and the CPP switch pin 4, component side.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes : GO to D5.
No : INSTALL a new CPP switch. REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - 2.3L . TEST the system for normal operation.
- D5 CHECK CIRCUIT 199 (LB/YE) FOR AN OPEN
- Measure the resistance between the speed control actuator C122-2, circuit 199 (LB/YE), harness side and the CPP switch C2070-4, circuit 199 (LB/YE), harness side.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes : GO to D6.
No : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- D6 CHECK CIRCUIT 359 (GY/RD) FOR AN OPEN
- Disconnect: PCM C175b.
- Measure the resistance between the CPP switch C2070-2, circuit 359 (GY/RD), harness side and the PCM C175b-41, circuit 359 (GY/RD), harness side.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes : GO to D7.
No : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- D7 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM MODULE OPERATION
- Disconnect the PCM connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- pushed-out pins
- Connect the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still presents?
Yes : INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - 2.3L or ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - 3.0L (4V) . TEST the system for normal operation.
No : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
