Pinpoint Test K: DTC C1218 - Lamp Anti-Lock Brake System (Abs) Warning Output Failure

CAUTION: Use the correct probe adaptor(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adaptor(s) may damage the connector.
NOTE: Repair all other DTCs first before proceeding with this pinpoint test.
  1. K1 RETRIEVE ABS MODULE AND POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) DTCs 
    • Connect the scan tool.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Retrieve ABS module and PCM DTCs.
    • Are any DTCs retrieved? 

    Yes:  For ABS module DTCs, GO to the ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX . For PCM DTCs, REFER to INTRODUCTION - HYBRID article .

    No:  GO to  K2.

  2. K2 RETRIEVE THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE (TCM) FREEZE FRAME DATA 
    • Retrieve the TCM freeze frame data.
    • Record the ABS status PID and the powertrain control module (PCM) total torque desired PID.
    • Does the ABS status PID indicate active and the PCM PID indicate greater than 200 Nm (148 lb-ft)? 

    Yes:  GO to  K3.

    No:  CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. If DTC C1218 returns, GO to  K4. If DTC C1218 does not return, the system is operating correctly at this time.

  3. K3 MONITOR THE TOTAL TORQUE DESIRED PID IN THE TCM 
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: TCM PID.
    • Road test the vehicle performing an ABS event while monitoring the total torque desired PID.
    • Does the total torque desired PID indicate less than 200 N.m (148 lb-ft)? 

    Yes:  GO to  K4.

    No:  GO to  K7.

  4. K4 MONITOR THE ABS STATUS PID IN THE TCM 
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: ABS module PID.
    • Road test the vehicle performing an ABS event while monitoring the ABS status PID.
    • Does the ABS status PID indicate active during the ABS event and inactive during a normal road test? 

    Yes:  GO to  K6.

    No:  GO to  K5.

  5. K5 CHECK FOR ABS MODULE OPERATION 
    • Disconnect the ABS module connector.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion.
      • pushed-out pins.
    • Connect the ABS module connector and make sure it seats correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 

    Yes:  INSTALL a new HCU. REFER to HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT (HCU) - HYBRID . TEST the system for normal operation.

    No:  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTC(s). REPEAT the self-test.

  6. K6 CHECK FOR TCM OPERATION 
    • Disconnect the TCM.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion.
      • pushed-out pins.
    • Connect the TCM and make sure it seats correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 

    Yes:  INSTALL a new TCM. REFER to AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE-TRANSMISSION - ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION (ECVT) . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

    No:  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.

  7. K7 CHECK FOR PCM OPERATION 
    • Disconnect the PCM.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion.
      • pushed-out pins.
    • Connect the PCM and make sure it seats correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 

    Yes:  : INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to INSTALLATION . CLEAR the DTC(s). REPEAT the self-test.

    No:  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTC(s). REPEAT the self-test.
