Removal and Installation

  1. Remove the steering gear. For additional information, refer to STEERING GEAR .
  2. Mark the pinion shaft and the steering gear housing for correct reference during installation.

  3. NOTE: Position the steering gear in a soft-jaw vise or damage to the steering gear may occur.
  4. Loosen the tie-rod jam nut.
    • To install, tighten to 90 Nm (66 lb-ft).
  5. Remove the outer tie-rod end and the tie-rod jam nut.
    • To install, tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
  6. NOTE: It is necessary to remove both bellows boots when removing the RH inner tie rod.
  7. Remove the 4 bellows clamps and the 2 steering gear bellows boots.
  8. Using a suitable wrench, hold the piston shaft.
  9. Using a suitable wrench, remove the inner tie rod.
    • To install, tighten to 103 Nm (76 lb-ft).
  10. NOTE: Using a suitable wrench, hold the piston shaft while tightening the inner tie rod.
  11. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
    • Thoroughly clean and inspect all the parts to be reused. Install new parts as necessary.
