WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2010 Lincoln MKX and 2010 Ford Edge. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
The low OWC is a brake clutch that holds the rear planetary carrier in one direction and allows it to freewheel in the opposite direction which eliminates engine braking in 1st gear when the transaxle is in DRIVE. The low OWC is used in 1st gear when the transaxle is in DRIVE.
