Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Deactivation and Reactivation: Reactivation

  1. Remove RCM fuse 2 (10A) from the CJB.
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING & CABLES article.
  3. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the driver seat side air bag electrical connector.

  5. Connect the driver seat side air bag module electrical connector, located at the lower rear of the seat cushion pan.

  7. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the passenger seat side air bag electrical connector.

  9. Connect the passenger seat side air bag module electrical connector, located at the lower rear of the seat cushion pan.

  11. Disconnect the passenger air bag module jumper harness from the passenger air bag module electrical connector on the vehicle wiring harness.

  13. Separate the locking inserts and disconnect the 2 restraint system diagnostic tools from the passenger air bag module jumper harness electrical connectors.

    NOTE: The passenger air bag module jumper harness electrical connectors are unique and cannot be reversed when connected to the passenger air bag module. Match the electrical connector key to the keyway in the passenger air bag module. Do not force the electrical connectors into the passenger air bag module.
    NOTE: Care must be taken when connecting the passenger air bag module electrical connectors to prevent damage to the electrical connector terminals and the passenger air bag module pins.
    NOTE: Carefully align the locking inserts to the electrical connectors or damage may result.
  15. Align and connect the passenger air bag module jumper harness electrical connectors to the passenger air bag module, install the locking inserts and attach the passenger air bag module electrical connector pin-type retainer to the passenger air bag module.

  17. Make sure the J-clips on the back of the passenger air bag module are fully seated into the slots.

  19. Make sure the retaining clips on the back of the passenger air bag module are fully seated onto the ears.

    NOTE: Do not handle the passenger air bag module by grabbing the edges of the deployment doors. Damage to the air bag module may occur.
  21. Install the passenger air bag module into the instrument panel.
    • Make sure the 2 retaining clips and 2 alignment pins are fully seated into the instrument panel. The passenger air bag module should have a flush fit and finish up against the instrument panel.
  22. Through the glove compartment opening, install the passenger air bag module bolts.
    • Tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).

  24. Connect the passenger air bag module electrical connector.

  26. Connect the glove compartment isolator. Close the glove compartment.
  27. Position the instrument cluster finish panel and install the RH side retainers.

  29. Install the retainers on the instrument cluster finish panel LH side.

  31. Install the 2 instrument cluster finish panel screws.

  33. Position the shifter lever in the PARK position.
  34. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tools from the clockspring electrical connectors at the top of the steering column.

  36. Connect the driver air bag module.
    1. Connect the horn electrical connector.
    2. NOTE: The clockspring electrical connectors are unique and cannot be reversed when connected to the driver air bag module. Match the electrical connector key to the keyway in the driver air bag module. Do not force the electrical connectors into the driver air bag module.
    3. Connect the driver air bag module electrical connectors as noted during removal.
    4. Install the driver air bag module electrical wiring into the driver air bag wiring clip.

    NOTE: With the driver air bag module held as close to the steering wheel as possible, take up the slack in the wiring by gently tucking any excess length into the pocket at the bottom of the steering wheel before rocking the driver air bag module into place.
  38. Align the 4 driver air bag module locking pins to the openings in the steering wheel and position the driver air bag module in place.

  40. With the locking pins aligned and the driver air bag module positioned to the steering wheel, push inward seating the 4 locking pins to the spring clips.
    • An audible click should be heard when the driver air bag module locking pins are seated in place to the spring clip. When the 4 locking pins are seated in place, there should be an even uniform gap between the driver air bag module trim cover and the steering wheel.

  42. Align the 4 driver air bag module locking pins to the openings in the steering wheel and position the driver air bag module in place.

  44. With the locking pins aligned and the driver air bag module positioned to the steering wheel, push inward seating the 4 locking pins to the spring clip.
    • An audible click should be heard when the driver air bag module locking pins are seated in place to the spring clip. When the 4 locking pins are seated in place, there should be an even uniform gap between the driver air bag module trim cover and the steering wheel.

    WARNING: Remove restraint system diagnostic tools from the vehicle prior to road testing. If tools are not removed, the supplemental restraint system (SRS) device may not deploy in a crash. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death in a crash and possibly violate vehicle safety standards.
  46. Make sure all restraint system diagnostic tool(s) that may have been installed during the repair have been removed from the vehicle and all SRS components are connected.
  47. Turn the ignition switch from OFF to ON.
  48. Install the RCM fuse 2 (10A) to the CJB and install the cover.
  49. WARNING: Make sure no one is in the vehicle and there is nothing blocking or placed in front of any air bag module when the battery is connected. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
  50. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING & CABLES article.
  51. Prove out the SRS as follows:

    Turn the ignition key from ON to OFF. Wait 10 seconds, then turn the key back to ON and visually monitor the air bag warning indicator with the air bag modules installed. The air bag warning indicator will light continuously for approximately 6 seconds and then turn off. If an air bag SRS fault is present, the air bag warning indicator will:

    - fail to light.

    - remain lit continuously.

    - flash at a 5Hz rate (RCM not configured).

    The air bag warning indicator might not light until approximately 30 seconds after the ignition switch has been turned from the OFF to the ON position. This is the time required for the RCM to complete the testing of the SRS. If the air bag warning indicator is inoperative and a SRS fault exists, a chime will sound in a pattern of 5 sets of 5 beeps. If this occurs, the air bag warning indicator and any SRS fault discovered must be diagnosed and repaired.

    Clear all continuous DTCs from the RCM using a scan tool.
