Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Deactivation and Reactivation: Deactivation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2009 Mercury Sable, 2009 Ford Taurus X, and 2009 Ford Taurus. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: Always carry or place a live air bag module with the air bag and deployment door/trim cover/tear seam pointed away from the body. Do not set a live air bag module down with the deployment door/trim cover/tear seam face down. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
WARNING: Never probe the electrical connectors on air bag, safety canopy or side air curtain modules. Failure to follow this instruction may result in the accidental deployment of these modules, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death.
WARNING: Never probe the electrical connectors on safety belt buckle/retractor pretensioners or adaptive load limiting retractors. Failure to follow this instruction may result in the accidental deployment of the safety belt pretensioners or adaptive load limiting retractors, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death.
WARNING: If a vehicle has been in a crash, inspect the restraints control module (RCM) and the impact sensor (if equipped) mounting areas for deformation. If damaged, restore the mounting areas to the original production configuration. A new RCM and sensors must be installed whether or not the air bags have deployed. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury or death in a crash.
WARNING: Do not handle, move or change the original horizontal mounting position of the restraints control module (RCM) while the RCM is connected and the ignition switch is ON. Failure to follow this instruction may result in the accidental deployment of the safety canopy and cause serious personal injury or death.
WARNING: To reduce the risk of accidental deployment, do not use any memory saver devices. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death.
NOTE: The air bag warning indicator illuminates when the restraints control module (RCM) fuse is removed and the ignition switch is ON.
NOTE: The supplemental restraint system (SRS) must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.

All vehicles 

  1. Turn all vehicle accessories OFF.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to OFF.
  3. At the smart junction box (SJB), located below the LH side of the instrument panel, remove the cover and the RCM fuse 32 (10A) from the SJB. For additional information, refer to the appropriate Wiring Diagram article .
  4. Turn the ignition ON and visually monitor the air bag warning indicator for at least 30 seconds. The air bag warning indicator will remain illuminated continuously (no flashing) if the correct RCM fuse has been removed. If the air bag warning indicator does not remain illuminated continuously, remove the correct RCM fuse before proceeding.
  5. Turn the ignition OFF.
    6. WARNING: Always deplete the backup power supply before repairing or installing any new front or side air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) component and before servicing, removing, installing, adjusting or striking components near the front or side impact sensors or the restraints control module (RCM). Nearby components include doors, instrument panel, console, door latches, strikers, seats and hood latches.

    See DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION  for location of the RCM and impact sensor(s).

    To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least 1 minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies (if equipped).

    Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury or death in the event of an accidental deployment.

  6. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES article.
  7. Remove the driver air bag module. Refer to Driver Air Bag Module .
  8. Open the glove compartment door.
  9. Release the dampening strut from the LH side of glove compartment door and lower door fully.
    10. NOTE: Taurus X shown in illustration, Taurus and Sable similar.
    NOTE: RH shown in illustration, LH similar.
  10. Through the glove compartment opening, disconnect the 2 passenger air bag module electrical connectors.

  11. From under the rear of the passenger seat, slide and disengage the passenger seat side air bag module electrical connector locking clip, and then release the tab and disconnect the passenger seat side air bag module electrical connector.

  12. From under the rear of the driver seat, slide and disengage the driver seat side air bag module electrical connector locking clip, and then release the tab and disconnect the driver seat side air bag module electrical connector.

    Taurus X safety canopy modules 

  13. Release and position aside the driver side D-pillar trim panel.

  14. Disconnect the driver side safety canopy module electrical connector.

  15. Release and position aside the passenger side D-pillar trim panel.

  16. Disconnect the passenger side safety canopy module electrical connector.

    Taurus and Sable safety canopy modules 

  17. Remove the C-pillar trim panels. For additional information, refer to INTERIOR TRIM AND ORNAMENTATION article.
    18. NOTE: Parcel shelf removed for clarity.
  18. Disconnect the driver side safety canopy module electrical connector.

  19. Disconnect the passenger side safety canopy module electrical connector.

    All vehicles 

  20. Install the RCM fuse 32 (10A) to the SJB.
  21. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES article.
