Pinpoint Test U: The Reversing Lamps Are Inoperative

NOTE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
  1. U1 CHECK FOR PCM OR TCM TRANSMISSION RANGE (TR) SENSOR DTCs FROM THE SELF-TEST 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Review the DTCs from the PCM KOEO self-test and the TCM self-test.
    • Are any TR sensor DTCs present? 
    1. YES  : REFER to AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - 6F50 article.
    2. NO  : Go to  U2.
  2. U2 CHECK CIRCUIT SBB26 (YE/RD) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Reversing Lamps Relay
    • Measure the voltage between the reversing lamps relay pin 1, circuit SBB26 (YE/RD), harness side and ground; and between the reversing lamps relay pin 3, circuit SBB26 (YE/RD), harness side and ground.

    • Are the voltages greater than 10 volts? 
    1. YES  : Go to  U3.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  3. U3 CHECK CIRCUIT CLS10 (GN/BN) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Connect a fused (20A) jumper wire between the reversing lamps relay pin 1, circuit SBB26 (YE/RD), harness side and the reversing lamps relay pin 5, circuit CLS10 (GN/BN), harness side.

    • Do the reversing lamps illuminate? 
    1. YES  : REMOVE the jumper wire. Go to  U4.
    2. NO  : REMOVE the jumper wire. VERIFY the BJB fuse 26 (20A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  4. U4 CHECK THE REVERSING LAMPS RELAY 
    • Carry out the reversing lamps relay component test. Refer to COMPONENT TESTING article.
    • Is the reversing lamps relay OK? 
    1. YES  : Go to  U5.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new reversing lamps relay. TEST the system for normal operation.
  5. U5 CHECK CIRCUIT CLS28 (BU/WH) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    • Disconnect: PCM C175t
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the reversing lamps relay pin 2, circuit CLS28 (BU/WH), harness side and ground.

    • Is any voltage present? 
    1. YES  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    2. NO  : Go to  U6.
  6. U6 CHECK CIRCUITS CLS28 (BU/WH) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Connect: Reversing Lamps Relay
    • Connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between the PCM C175t-3, circuit CLS28 (BU/WH), harness side and ground.

    • Do the reversing lamps illuminate? 
    1. YES  : REMOVE the jumper wire. Go to  U7.
    2. NO  : REMOVE the jumper wire. REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  7. U7 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the PCM connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • damaged pins
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR any DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
