The vehicle identification number (VIN) is a 17-digit combination of letters and numbers. The VIN is stamped on a metal tab riveted to the instrument panel top, upper left of the dash. The VIN is also found on the vehicle certification (VC) label. If the VIN plate requires replacement, authorized dealers must contact their respective regional office.

The first 3 VIN positions are the world manufacturer code.

1FM - Ford Motor Company, USA, multi-purpose vehicle (MPV)
1FT - Ford Motor Company, USA, truck (completed vehicle)

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) and Restraint Type

The fourth VIN position is the vehicle restraint-type code.

D - 5,001-6,000 pounds (GVWR) with driver and front passenger air bags and side impact protection

Positions 5 through 7 indicate vehicle line, series and body type.

K00 - Ford Taurus X, delivery truck, Front Wheel Drive (FWD)
K02 - Ford Taurus X, FWD, SEL
K03 - Ford Taurus X, FWD, Limited
K05 - Ford Taurus X, All-Wheel Drive (AWD), SEL
K06 - Ford Taurus X, AWD, Limited
K07 - Ford Taurus X, FWD, Eddie Bauer
K08 - Ford Taurus X, AWD, Eddie Bauer

The eighth VIN position is the engine displacement and number of cylinders.

W - 3.5L, DOHC, 4 valve, V6

Check Digit

The ninth VIN position is a government-assigned, computer-generated check digit.

Model Year

The tenth VIN position is the model year code.

The eleventh VIN position is the assembly plant code.

The last 6 VIN positions are a numeric code for the vehicle build sequence. This is also the vehicle serial and warranty number. The serial number can also be found on the engine block, transmission and frame.
