Pinpoint Test H: The Defrost System is Inoperative - ON Indicator

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2009 Mercury Grand Marquis and 2009 Ford Crown Victoria. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Refer to appropriate SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article, Heated Windows for schematic and connector information.

Normal Operation

When the rear window defrost relay is energized, switched voltage is supplied to the rear window defrost switch indicator through circuit 59 (DG/VT). The switch is grounded through circuit 57 (BK).

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

PINPOINT TEST H: THE DEFROST SYSTEM IS INOPERATIVE - ON INDICATOR

  1. H1 CHECK THE HEATED REAR WINDOW OPERATION
    • Key in ON position.
    • Press the rear window defrost switch to ON.
    • Does the heated rear window operate?
    1. YES  : Go to  H2.
    2. NO  : Go to Pinpoint Test E .
  2. H2 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE REAR WINDOW DEFROST SWITCH INDICATOR
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Rear Window Defrost Switch C241
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: DDM Active Command HEAT_BCK
    • Fig 1: Checking Circuit For Voltage

    • Measure the voltage between rear window defrost switch C241-4, circuit 59 (DG/VT), harness side and ground.
    • Trigger HEAT_BCK ON.
    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
    1. YES  : Go to  H3.
    2. NO  : VERIFY the battery junction box (BJB) fuse 24 (10A) is OK. If OK, go to  H4 .
  3. H3 CHECK CIRCUIT 57 (BK) FOR AN OPEN
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Fig 2: Checking Circuit For Open

    • Measure the resistance between rear window defrost switch C241-7, circuit 57 (BK), harness side and ground.
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new rear window defrost switch. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  4. H4 CHECK CIRCUIT 186 (BN/LB) FOR AN OPEN
    • Disconnect: BJB Fuse 24 (10A)
    • Fig 3: Checking Circuit For Open

    • Measure the voltage between input cavity of BJB fuse 24 (10A), circuit 186 (BN/LB) and ground.
    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
    1. YES  : REPAIR circuit 59 (DG/VT). TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : REPAIR circuit 186 (BN/LB). TEST the system for normal operation.
