Valve Springs: Removal

- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING article.
- Remove the camshaft roller followers. For additional information, refer to Camshaft Roller Follower .
- Position the piston at the top of the stroke.
- Remove the spark plugs. For additional information, refer to ENGINE IGNITION - 4.6L (2V) article.
- Install compressed air in the cylinder to hold both valves in position.
- Using the Valve Spring Compressor, compress the valve springs.
- Remove the valve spring retainer keys, the valve spring retainer and the valve spring.
WARNING:
Before servicing a vehicle equipped with a fire suppression system, depower the system by following the procedure in FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM
article. Failure to follow the instructions may result in serious personal injury.
NOTE:
If air pressure has forced the piston to the bottom of the cylinder, any loss of air pressure will allow the valve to fall into the cylinder. If air pressure must be removed, support the valve prior to removal or engine damage may occur.
