Oil Pan: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2008 Ford Econoline, 2008 Ford E450 Super Duty, and 2008 Ford Cutaway. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
    NOTE: The oil pump screen and pickup tube must be in the oil pan when the oil pan is positioned in the vehicle.
  1. Position the new oil pan gasket and the oil pan in the vehicle from the rear of the engine.
  2. Position the oil pump screen and pickup tube and the 3 bolts into the oil pan and position the oil pan and new oil pan gasket onto the crossmember.
  3. CAUTION: Make sure the O-ring is in place and not damaged. A missing or damaged O-ring can cause foam in the lubrication system, low oil pressure and severe engine damage.
    NOTE: Clean and inspect the mating surfaces and install a new O-ring. Lubricate the O-ring with clean engine oil.
  4. Position the oil pump screen and pickup tube and install the 3 bolts.
    • Tighten the 2 oil pump screen and pickup tube-to-oil pump bolts to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
    • Tighten the oil pump screen and pickup tube-to-spacer bolt to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  5. NOTE: If the oil pan is not secured within 4 minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned. To clean the sealing area, use silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging. Allow to dry until there is no sign of wetness, or 4 minutes, whichever is longer. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage.
  6. Apply the silicone gasket and sealant at the engine front cover-to-cylinder block mating surface.

    NOTE: If the oil pan is not secured within 4 minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned. To clean the sealing area, use silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging. Allow to dry until there is no sign of wetness, or 4 minutes, whichever is longer. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage.
  8. Apply silicone gasket and sealant in the locations shown.

  10. Tighten the bolts in 3 stages, in the sequence shown.
    • Stage 1: Tighten to 2 Nm (18 lb-in).
    • Stage 2: Tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
    • Stage 3: Tighten an additional 60 degrees.

  12. Lower the engine and remove the special tools.
  13. Position the flexplate inspection plate and install the 2 bolts.
    • Tighten to 34 Nm (25 lb-ft).

  15. Install the engine support insulator nuts.
    • Tighten to 90 Nm (66 lb-ft).

  17. Position the transmission fluid cooler tube support bracket and install the nut.
    • Tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).

  19. Install the new oil filter.
    • Tighten to 16 Nm (12 lb-ft).

    NOTE: Do not reuse the O-ring seal.
  21. Install the new O-ring seal and the heater outlet tube.
    • Lubricate the O-ring seal with engine coolant.

  23. Hand-tighten the heater outlet tube upper stud and install the lower stud.
    • Tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).

  25. Connect the oil fill tube to the RH valve cover.

  27. Install the oil fill tube support bracket bolt.
    • Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).

  29. Install the transmission-to-engine bolts.
    • Tighten to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft).

  31. Install the shield and the retainers.

  33. Install the intake manifold. For additional information, refer to Intake Manifold .
  34. Install the engine cover. For additional information, refer to INTERIOR TRIM AND ORNAMENTATION article.
  35. Fill the engine with clean engine oil.
  36. Install the engine cooling fan and fan shroud. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING article.
  37. Fill and bleed the engine cooling system. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING article.
