Pinpoint Test G: The Speedometer/Odometer Is Inoperative

  1. G1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED PCM DTCs FROM THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND SELF-TESTS 
    • Check for recorded PCM DTCs from the continuous self-test.
    • Are any DTCs recorded? 
    1. YES  : REFER to the appropriate Engine Performance article.
    2. NO  : Go to  G2.
  2. G2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (IC) SELF-TESTS 
    • Check for recorded instrument cluster (IC) DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests.
    • Are any DTCs recorded? 
    1. YES  : For DTC U0100, go to Pinpoint Test AD .

      For DTC U2023, RETRIEVE and REPAIR all non-network DTCs in the other modules on the network. REFER to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES article for a list of all DTCs.

      For all other DTCs, REFER to DTC Charts .

    2. NO  : Go to  G3.
  3. G3 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (IC) SPEEDOMETER ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster (IC) DataLogger
    • Select the instrument cluster (IC) speedometer (SPDOMETER). Scroll the speedometer in 10% increments.
    • Does the speedometer start at 0 km/h (0 mph) and increase by 19 km/h (12 mph) for each 10% change commanded? 
    1. YES  : Go to  G4.
    2. NO  : Go to  G5.
  4. G4 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the PCM connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • damaged pins
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - GASOLINE ENGINES article or ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - DIESEL ENGINE article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
  5. G5 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (IC) OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the instrument cluster (IC) connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • damaged pins
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the instrument cluster (IC) connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster (IC). REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
