Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Deactivation and Reactivation: Reactivation

All vehicles 

  1. Remove the RCM fuse 33 (15A) from the SJB.
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES article.
  3. Vehicles with safety canopies and seat side air bags 

  4. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the vehicle harness side of the driver seat side air bag module electrical connector.

  6. Connect the driver seat side air bag module electrical connector and then slide and engage the seat side air bag electrical connector locking clip.

  8. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the vehicle harness side of the driver side safety canopy module electrical connector.

  10. Connect the driver side safety canopy module electrical connector.

  12. Install the driver side D-pillar trim panel.
    1. Engage the D-pillar trim panel to the quarter trim panel.
    2. Install the D-pillar trim panel.
    3. Install the weatherstrip.

  14. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the vehicle harness side of the passenger side safety canopy module electrical connector.

  16. Connect the passenger side safety canopy module electrical connector.

  18. Install the passenger side D-pillar trim panel.
    1. Engage the D-pillar trim panel to the quarter trim panel.
    2. Install the D-pillar trim panel.
    3. Install the weatherstrip.

  20. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the vehicle harness side of the passenger seat side air bag module electrical connector.

  22. Connect the passenger seat side air bag module electrical connector and then slide and engage the seat side air bag electrical connector locking clip.

    All vehicles 

  24. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the vehicle harness side of the passenger air bag module electrical connector.

  26. Through the glove compartment opening, connect the passenger air bag module electrical connector.

  28. Close the glove compartment.
  29. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the clockspring electrical connector at the top of the steering column.

  31. Connect and install the driver air bag module electrical connector.
    1. Connect the driver air bag module electrical connector.
    2. Through the steering wheel access cover opening, slide the driver air bag module electrical connector onto the pin-type retainer.

  33. Install the steering wheel access cover.

    WARNING: The restraint system diagnostic tool is for restraint system service only. Remove from vehicle prior to road use. Failure to remove could result in injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards.
  35. Make sure all restraint system diagnostic tool(s) that may have been installed during the repair have been removed from the vehicle and all SRS components are connected.
  36. Turn the ignition switch from OFF to ON.
  37. Install RCM fuse 33 (15A) to the SJB and install the cover.
  38. WARNING: Be sure that nobody is in the vehicle and that there is nothing blocking or set in front of any air bag module when the battery ground cable is connected.
  39. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES article.
  40. Prove out the supplemental restraint system (SRS) as follows:

    Turn the ignition key from ON to OFF. Wait 10 seconds, then turn the key back to ON and visually monitor the air bag indicator with the air bag modules installed. The air bag indicator will light continuously for approximately 6 seconds and then turn off. If an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) fault is present, the air bag indicator will:

    - fail to light.

    - remain lit continuously.

    - flash.

    The flashing might not occur until approximately 30 seconds after the ignition switch has been turned from the OFF to the ON position. This is the time required for the restraints control module (RCM) to complete the testing of the SRS. If the air bag indicator is inoperative and a SRS fault exists, a chime will sound in a pattern of 5 sets of 5 beeps. If this occurs, the air bag indicator and any SRS fault discovered must be diagnosed and repaired.

    Clear all continuous DTCs from the restraints control module using a scan tool.
