Pinpoint Test V: The Powertrain Malfunction (Wrench) Warning Indicator is Never/Always On

Normal Operation

The powertrain malfunction (wrench) telltale can be turned on by 1 of 2 modules. The PCM provides the electronic throttle control (ETC) status and the transmission status, and the 4X4 control module (if equipped) provides a status of the all wheel drive (AWD) system to the instrument cluster (IC). Each module monitors the powertrain for their respective function(s) and provides the instrument cluster (IC) with the operating status over the high speed controller area network (HS-CAN) communication bus. When a fault condition exists in any of the monitored systems, the PCM or 4X4 control module (if equipped) provides the instrument cluster (IC) with a message to turn on the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator.

If the ETC or transmission status message is missing or if the data is deemed invalid by the instrument cluster (IC) for more than 5 seconds, the instrument cluster (IC) sets DTC U0100 in continuous memory and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator on. If equipped with AWD and the AWD status message is missing or invalid for more than 5 seconds, the instrument cluster (IC) sets DTC U0102 in continuous memory and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator on.

NOTE: If U0100 is set in the instrument cluster (IC) other symptoms may also be present such as an inoperative speedometer, tachometer or odometer.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

PINPOINT TEST V: THE POWERTRAIN MALFUNCTION (WRENCH) WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON

  1. V1 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (IC) INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster (IC) DataLogger
    • Select the instrument cluster (IC) powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator (ETC_IND) active command and command the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator on and off. Observe the indicator.
    • Does the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator illuminate when commanded on, and turn off when commanded off?
    1. YES  : Go to  V2.
    2. NO  : Go to  V9.
  2. V2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND PCM AND TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE (TCM) SELF-TESTS
    • Check for recorded PCM and TCM DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests.
    • Are any PCM or TCM DTCs recorded?
    1. YES  : For TCM DTCs, REFER to AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - 6F50 article.

For PCM DTCs, REFER to the Introduction - Gasoline Engines article.

    2. NO  : If equipped with AWD, go to  V3.

If not equipped with AWD, go to  V4.

  3. V3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND 4X4 CONTROL MODULE SELF-TESTS
    • Check for recorded 4X4 control module DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests.
    • Are any 4X4 control module DTCs recorded?
    1. YES  : REFER to FOUR WHEEL DRIVE (4WD) SYSTEMS article.
    2. NO  : Go to  V4.
  4. V4 CHECK THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (IC) TCM POWERTRAIN MALFUNCTION (WRENCH) REQUEST
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster (IC) DataLogger
    • Select and monitor the instrument cluster (IC) TCM powertrain malfunction (wrench) request (WR_LMP_TCM) PID.
    • Does the TCM wrench request PID read YES?
    1. YES  : Go to  V7.
    2. NO  : Go to  V5.
  5. V5 CHECK THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (IC) ETC POWERTRAIN MALFUNCTION (WRENCH) REQUEST PID
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster (IC) PID
    • Select and monitor the instrument cluster (IC) ETC powertrain malfunction (wrench) request (WR_LMP_ETC) PID.
    • Does the ETC wrench request PID read YES?
    1. YES  : Go to  V7.
    2. NO  : If equipped with AWD, go to  V6.

If not equipped with AWD, go to  V9.

  6. V6 CHECK THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (IC) 4X4 CONTROL MODULE POWERTRAIN MALFUNCTION (WRENCH) REQUEST PID
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster (IC) DataLogger
    • Select and monitor the instrument cluster (IC) 4X4 control module powertrain malfunction (wrench) request (WR_LMP_4X4M) PID.
    • Does the 4X4 control module powertrain malfunction (wrench) request PID read YES?
    1. YES  : Go to  V8.
    2. NO  : Go to  V9.
