Pinpoint Test H: Inaccurate Speedometer Indication

Normal Operation

The instrument cluster (IC) receives the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) signal from the PCM over the high speed controller area network (HS-CAN) communication bus. The instrument cluster (IC) monitors the VSS input from the PCM and commands the speedometer with a corresponding movement of the pointer.

If the instrument cluster (IC) does not receive the vehicle speed data from the PCM for 5 seconds or less, the instrument cluster (IC) defaults the speedometer to the last setting, based upon the last known good vehicle speed message. If the instrument cluster (IC) does not receive the vehicle speed data from the PCM for more than 5 seconds or if the data received is deemed invalid, the instrument cluster (IC) sets DTC U0100 in continuous memory and defaults the speedometer to 0 km/h (0 mph).

NOTE: If DTC U0100 is set in the instrument cluster (IC), other observable symptoms may be an inoperative tachometer, temperature gauge or odometer.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

PINPOINT TEST H: INACCURATE SPEEDOMETER INDICATION

  1. H1 CHECK THE TIRE SIZE AND AXLE RATIO CONFIGURATION
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: PCM Programmable Parameters
    • NOTE: The correct axle ratio and tire size can be found on the vehicle certification label on the LH B-pillar. Refer to IDENTIFICATION CODES article.
    • Verify that the vehicle has the correct tire size and the tire size and axle ratio are correctly configured in the PCM.
    • Is the tire size correct and are the tire size and axle ratio parameters correctly configured?
    1. YES  : Go to  H2.
    2. NO  : CONFIGURE the PCM for the correct tire size and axle ratio. TEST the system for normal operation.
  2. H2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND PCM SELF-TESTS
    • Check for recorded PCM DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests.
    • Are any PCM DTCs recorded?
    1. YES  : REFER to the Introduction - Gasoline Engines article.
    2. NO  : Go to  H3.
  3. H3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (IC) SELF-TESTS
    • Check for recorded instrument cluster (IC) DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests.
    • Is DTC U0100 recorded?
    1. YES  : Go to Pinpoint Test AG  .
    2. NO  : Go to  H4.
  4. H4 OBSERVE THE SPEEDOMETER OPERATION
    • Key in ON position.
    • Observe the speedometer while driving the vehicle at various speeds and stopping frequently.
    • Does the speedometer begin at 0 km/h (0 mph) and fully return to the 0 km/h (0 mph) position when the vehicle is stopped?
    1. YES  : Go to  H5.
    2. NO  : Go to  H8.
  5. H5 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (IC) SPEEDOMETER ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster (IC) DataLogger
    • Select the instrument cluster (IC) speedometer (SPDOMETER) active command and command the speedometer in increments of approximately 10%. Observe the speedometer. The speedometer starts at 0 km/h (0 mph) and moves approximately 19 km/h (12 mph) (Edge) or 22.5 km/h (14 mph) (MKX) for each 10% increment.
    • Does the speedometer begin at 0 km/h (0 mph) and move by approximately 19 km/h (12 mph) (Edge) or 22.5 km/h (14 mph) (MKX) for each 10% increment?
    1. YES  : Go to  H6.
    2. NO  : Go to  H8.
  6. H6 CHECK THE PCM VSS PIDs
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: PCM DataLogger
    • Select the PCM vehicle speed (VSS) PID and monitor the PID while driving the vehicle at various speeds.
    • Do the PCM PIDs agree with the speedometer indication?
    1. YES  : Go to  H7.
    2. NO  : Go to  H8.
  7. H7 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION
    • Disconnect all the PCM connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • damaged pins
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present?
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
  8. H8 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (IC) OPERATION
    • Disconnect the instrument cluster (IC) connector.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • damaged pins
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect the instrument cluster (IC) connector and make sure it seats correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present?
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster (IC). REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
